한국음악학 그리고 서울대 동양음악연구소

Abstract

오늘 서울대 음대 통양음악연구소가 주최하는 제1회 국내학술대회의 기조발표를 하게 되어 영광으로 생각하면서 이 자리에 나왔다. 운초(云初) 장사훈(張師勛) 박사님께서 서울대 음대 국악과의 재임시절 이 연구소를 1976년 설립한 이래로 동양음악연구소가 꾸준히 『민족음악학』이라는 학술지의 발간과 기타 학술활동을 전개함으로써， 한국음악학의 발전에 중요한 역할을 담당했음은 주지의 사실이다. 만당 (晩堂) 이혜구(李惠求) 선생님과 운초 선생님을 위시한 한국음악학의 제1세대 이후 제2세대가 동양음악연구소에서 전개한 여러 업적들도 기억해야 마땅하다. 예컨대 서울대출판부에서 나온 『조선조 궁중의례와 음악』 (1998) 및 1998년 이래로 『민족음악학』을 계승한 국영문 학술지 『동양음악』의 출간을 한국음악학의 제2세대가 이룬 업적으로 꼽을 수 있다. 지금까지 전개한 동양음악연구소의 학술활동에 첨가하여 이 연구소가 21세기 한국음악학의 발전을 위해 무엇을 어떻게 해야 할 것인가에 대하여 본인의 학술활동을 회고하면서 잠시 생각해보고자 한다. 본인의 학술활동이 비록 개인적인 것이기는 하지만， 동양음악연구소의 발전을 위하여 하나의 참고자료가 될 수 있을 것이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 필자가 기조발표의 제목을 한국음악학 그리고 서울대 동양음악연구소라고 정한 까닭이 바로 여기에 있다.

Today, I am honored to address the keynote speech for the 1st Domestic Conference held by the Asian Music Research Institute of Seoul National University (SNU). It is well known that since Dr. Chang Sa-hun 張師勛 (pen name, Unch'o 云初) established the Institute in 1976 while he was a professor at the Korean Music Department of SNU, the Institute has continuously published the journal Minjok umakhak 『民族音樂學』 (literally, National Musicology; Journal of Asian Music Research Institute), and carried out other academic activities, which all greatly contributed to the development of Korean musicology. The various achievements accomplished by the second-generation Korean music scholars following the first-generation scholars of Korean musicology, Dr. Lee Hye-ku [Yi Hye-gu] 李惠求 (pen name, Mandang 晩堂) and Dr. Chang, should be acknowledged. For example, the academic achievements of the second generations of Korean musicology are the publication of Chosonjo kungjung uirye wa umak 『조선조 궁중의례와 음악』 (1998) or The Music and Court Rituals of the Choson Dynasty, and the Korean and English bilingual journal Tongyang umak 『동양음악』 -the successor of Minjok umakhak- published since 1998. Recollecting my academic activities, I would like to ponder upon the matter of what the Institute should accomplish and how it should carry it out for the development of Korean musicology of the twenty-first century. Even though my academic activities are personal, I thought that they may be references for the growth of the Asian Music Research Institute. This is why I have decided on the title "Korean Musicology and the Asian Music Research Institute of Seoul National University" for the keynote address.
