- Abstract
- The study explores inter relationship between conditionals and iconicity. So far the existence of iconicity in conditionals has been mentioned, but the nature of the iconicity has been neglected. In conditionals two different kinds of iconicity - temporal iconicity and causal iconicity - are observed. In conditionals with hypotheticality temporal iconicity (sequentiality or simultaneity) between two situations is reflected in the real level of logic. In contrast, in conditionals without hypotheticality temporal iconicity is expressed in the cognitive level. This pattem of ref1ection of temporal iconity can be applied to the causal iconicity. In conditionals with hypotheticality causal iconicity shows the causal relation between two situations in the real level of logic. That is direct ref1ection of reality. But in conditionals without hypotheticality shows the causal relation between two situations in the cognitive level. To understand the situations expressed in the protasis becomes a premise to get the validity to express the situations of apodosis .. In any case speaker' s cognitive inference is equally needed. While in conditionals with hypotheticality, speakers cognitive inference is used to place two real situations in the altemative-hypothetical world, in conditionals without hypotheticality speaker' s cognitive inference is need to construct new cognitive relations between situations. Conditionals, which can be connected easily with sequentiality, simultaneity, causality on the one hand can be used by speakers to reflect existent temporal, causal relationship of real world, on the other hand to build new cognitive temporal, causal relationship.
