Abstract
The study investigates the semantics and pragmatics of so-called "argumentative" modal particles ved' and zhe, based on their attestations in modem Russian literary narrative texts. Previous studies characterize the particle ved' as employed for strong argumentations and categorical assertions with an aggressive tone in close interlocutor relationship, whereas 2he as employed for gentle and polite argumentations with a persuasive tone. Although the previous studies provide detailed descriptions of contextually variable meanings of these particles, they fail to present semantic interrelations among these contextually variable meanings and semantic invariants of the given particles. More rigorous analyses of the given particles are found in recent cognitive explanations in terms of the speaker's inference patterns, utilizing Yokoyama(l986)' s Transactional Discourse Model(TDM). Although explanatory, this TDM-based cognitive approach is eclectic or ad hoc and cannot adequately deal with the sentences including both ved' and zhe.
