한국 대학 발전궤적에 나타난 미국 대학:서울대학의 경우

Abstract

This paper addresses to a rather simple question: Are Korean universities the end-products of the institutional reception of American ones? Or more specifically, is Seoul National University (SNU) mode led after the American research university? This paper will closely examine two moments when the interactions of the two models become most salient: the time of establishing Seoul National University in 1946 and the time of SNU's using top-class American universities as its benchmarks in its self~strengthening initiatives since 1994. This paper will identify the real nature of governance working at SNU. Contrary to the claims made by the historical revisionists, it was, not the issues of the class conflicts, but that of the conflicting idea of university that has shaped the rise of SNU. There still remained residual legacies of colonial university at SNU. This paper will further analyze the process by which SNU can be transforming itself into a world-class university with a specific focus on the internal reforms and the effectiveness of them. The main strategy undertaken to bring SNU up to the world-class level was to benchmark top-class American research universities. Hardly recognized but still survived phenomenon was the traditional mentor-disciple relations between prominent teachers and dedicated students at SNU in its great leap forward to excellence in research.
