학교교육의 질과 사교육 참여의 관계 분석

Abstract

논문 요약이 연구에서는 한국교육종단연구(KELS) 1차년도 데이터를 사용하여 우리나라 중학교 학생들의 수학 사교육 참여 가능성과 사교육 참여 강도에 학교교육의 질을 나타낼 수 있는 학교특성 변수들이 유의한 영향을 미치는가를 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 학생 개인의 배경특성에 있어서는 기존 연구들에서 밝혀진 바와 마찬가지로 남학생이 여학생보다 사교육에 참여하고 있을 가능성이 더 높고 더 많은 시간과 비용을 사교육에 투자하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 아버지의 학력년수가 더 높은 학생일수록 사교육에 참여하고 있을 가능성이 더 높고 더 많은 시간과 비용을 사교육에 투자하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 평준화 중소도시와 비교했을 때 대도시 지역에 사는 학생들이 사교육에 참여하고 있을 가능성이 더 높고 더 많은 시간과 비용을 사교육에 투자하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 평준화 중소도시와 비교했을 때 같은 중소도시이면서도 비평준화 지역에 사는 학생들이 사교육에 참여하고 있을 가능성이 더 낮고 더 적은 시간과 비용을 사교육에 투자하고 있는 것으로 나타났으나, 이러한 평준화 정책의 효과는 이 연구에서 사용된 학교특성 변수들이 모형에 투입되자 없어지는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 이러한 학생들과 학교의 배경변수들을 통제하고 나서도 학교특성 변수들이 학생들의 사교육 참여 여부와 사교육 강도에 영향을 미치는지를 살펴본 결과, 교사들의 "교수학습방법"에 대한 평균 연수시간과 학교의 시설과 여건에 대한 교사들의 평가, 교사의 열의에 대한 학생들의 평가가 학생들의 사교육 참여 가능성에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

Using the base year data of Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2005(KELS 2005), this study examined the effects of school-level factors on the students' participation in Mathematics private tutoring after controlling for the background characteristics of students and schools. The dependent variables were whether or not the student has participated in the math private tutoring (0/1), average weekly hour for math private tutoring, and average monthly cost in math private tutoring. For the analyses, hierarchical generalized linear model (HGLM) and hierarchical linear model (HLM) were used depending on the dependent variables. The results showed that school-level factors such as teachers' in-service training hours on "teaching and learning method" and students' perception on their school teachers' passion do have significantly negative relationship with students' participation in private tutoring and that school-level factor such as teachers' negative perception on the school facilities and resources has a positive relationship with students' participation in private tutoring, after controlling for the student and school background variables such as gender, father's schooling years, and whether the school is located in high school equalization policy area and large city area.
