온라인 학습 환경에서의 비언어 텍스트에 대한 개념적 고찰: Ong의 구술성과 문자성을 넘어서

Abstract

비언어적 요소나 단서는 인간의 의사소통의 근본적인 요소이다. 그러나 교육을 위한 공간이 온라인으로 확 대되면서 교육을 위해 필요한 의사소통에 몸짓이나 표정, 목소리 톤과 같은 전통적인 비언어적 단서나 뉘앙스 제공은 제한되거나 불가능해졌다. 이러한 한계점을 극복하기 위해 나타난 것이 비언어 텍스트이다. 비언어 텍 스트는 그간 교수․학습에서 적극적으로 활용을 독려해온 요소라기보다는 기존 언어 문법을 따르지 않는다는 이유로 언어파괴의 주범 및 교정의 대상이 되어 왔다. 그러나 비언어 텍스트를 활용보다는 지양의 대상으로 보 아야 하는 이유에 대해서는 근본적 개념 고찰이 제대로 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 비언어 텍스 트의 본질적 속성을 면밀하게 고찰해 보고, 그 속성을 이론적으로 논의하여 개념적 틀을 정립해 보고자 하였다. 논의 결과를 정리해 보면, 비언어 텍스트는 말의 속성인 구술성(orality)과 글의 속성인 문자성(literacy)을 동시에 가지며, 이에 더하여 말과 같은 글의 속성이 두드러지게 되는데, 본 연구에서는 이를 2차 문자성 (Secondary Literacy)으로 개념화하고 있다. 또한 이 연구에서는 이러한 개념적 확장의 근거를, 컴퓨터와 네트 워크의 결합으로 가능하게 된 비언어 텍스트 구현 매체의 동시성(synchronousity)이라는 속성에서 찾고 있 다. 마지막으로 이를 글로 정리된 지식을 말로 풀어 전달하는 강의라는 교육의 원형과 연결지어 교수학습의 상호작용에 시사점을 제시하고 있다.

Non-verbal elements and cues are basic components in human communication. However, as the space for educations expands to online environments, non-verbal cues such as gestures or eye-contacts are limited or become impossible. Non-verbal texts appear to overcome the limitations of offering non-verbal cues. However, non-verbal texts like emoticons in teaching and learning are not promoted to improve learning. In this study, we analyzed the essential characteristics of non-verbal text and explored the possibility of using actively in online teaching and learning. As the results of this study, we classified into orality, literacy, and second literacy with synchronism based on Ong's suggestion. And then we identified as non-verbal texts have the 'secondary literacy' which presents literacy based on the 'orality'. As technologies are advanced, non-verbal texts with synchronism could appear. The non-verbal texts could play an important role of improving teaching and learning activities. Therefore, non-verbal text are very important technology in online teaching and learning. It is important to design for using non-verbal texts in online teaching and learning environments.
