Abstract

Various opinions concerning the nature and methodology of modern geography have been expressed since the end of the 2nd WorId War in Germany. Some of these opinions were critically reviewed and summarized in this paper. But it must be taken into consideration that any conclusion about German geography is at this stage only tentative as further research could easily modify present opinions. 1) A distinguishing character of the geographical researches lies not in the fact that geography has a separate and independent objects of the research as the other sciences in general but that the methodology of the research is peculiar. Geographers should not be afraid to give up their researches because the objects of the geographical researches happen to over lap with those of the other sciences. More important is the fact that geographers should do their best to contribute more to the development and welfare of the society as well as the advancement in this science of geography because geography is in any case to study the surface of the earth and things on it. Geographers should not waste too much time discussing about the objects of the geographical researches. 2) The term "Landschaft" is very hard to define though this is very important concept in geography. Therefore, some geographers in Germany suggest that we should use "Geomer'" instead of Landschaft in order to define the objects of the geogaphical researches clearly.
