지방도시 청년층의 지역의식 : 울산시의 사례 연구

Abstract

This is a supplementary paper for the preceding study done by the same authors in the year of 1985 on the attitudes of community leaders toward the development of their town, Ulsan City.a) The survey was conducted in mind-1986: The respondendents were 2,100 youths of Ulsan, including college students, factory laborers, public employees and others. To understand the present situation as well

as to predict the future of a society, it is important to know the opinions and attitudes of leaders of the society, because theirs are likely to be the model for the rest of the people, and they are, above all, the decision makers. In the same vein, opinions and attitudes of the youths are clues for the change the society is undergoing, for they will assume the society's leading role soon. The comparison of regional consciousness of the two groups, that is the groups of leaders and youths, would allow us to foresee the main stream of the changes in territorially based life style for the coming years. The major findings of the survey are as follows: 1) Regarding to the urban envioronment the youths appreciate their own city not so much. They evaluate Ulsan inferior to larger cities, like Seoul, Pusan or Taegu, and inferior or similar to the neighboring cities of similar size such as Kyongju, Pohang or Masan. Only to its rural periphery Ulsan is perceived superior.

The high spirit toward development is considered as the most satisfying component of the urban envioronment. Consequently they are proud of the rapid urban growth of Ulsan which has no parallel in Korean history.
