Abstract
Making visual software is not only a work of communication, but also a part of a very lucrative large-scale industry. And the audio-visual industry, including movie, video, TV, and CATV, is securing a more important position in the entertainment industry all around the world. In Korea, the audio-visual industry has been paid more attention since the late 1980s, and is expected to be one of the leading industries in the near future.

This study started to investigate the nature and locational change of Korean the audio-visual industry(KA VI). The KA VI, which suffered from a weak basis, has grown rapidly during the past few years. And it has even reached the stage where some local governments plan to make an I audio-visual industry complex I for their own regional development.

By looking into the locational change and its factors, this study presents the locational characteristics of the KA VI. It also attempts to imply the proper strategy for making an audio-visual industry complex.

Both the literature review and interview method were used to gather necessary data. And through analyzing the obtained data and deep-interview, this work presents a simple model of the KA VI location. The deep-interview was carried out with Korean audio-visual makers - the film productions, CA TV program providers, and the program productions. Interview survey has been conducted on 14 film productions, 27 CATV program providers, and 5 program productions.

The result of this study can be summarized as follows : First of all, the location of the KA VI audio-visual industry is concentrated in Seoul. This is because the spatial linkage needed for production in the audio-visual industry has been formed

in Seoul. In the audio-visual industry, the gaining of information is very important to make the product. Seoul is the information center of Korea and it makes the production sector be located in that center.

Secondly, the Korean audio-visual firms were mainly located in CBD and Youido area in Seoul. And Chugmu-ro in CBD and Youido have been playing special roles as an agglomeration in the KA VI. Most of the functions for producing programs were concentrated in these two areas, and the local I embeddedness I of the KA VI was established. The location of the KA VI, however, is changing in 1990s. Many audio-visual firms have The Development and locational change of the Korean Audio-visual Industry moved to or started their businesses at new places - mostly the Kangnam area and Yangcheon-Kangseo area. This is because the centripetal force of the existing agglomeration has been reduced by altering of the conditions of the KA VI like the competition, the advent of the new film production system.

Therefore the center of the KA VI is generally moving from CBD and Y ouido to Kangnam and Kangseo region, though the specific direction of locational change differs with each sector of the KA VI. So it can be suggested that the spatial linkage of the KA VI has transformed to the new one.

Thirdly, the present locational change has a kind of correlation with the existing

agglomeration of the KA VI to some extent. This work finds that the KA VI is on a kind of transition period, so the geographical accessibility to the existing agglomeration is considered one of the important locational factors, even though the existing agglomeration has its influence, especially in the production sector. At the same time, a 'loose linkage' among the audio-visual firms is found on the new production center at Kangnam, Kangseo area. As the new spatial linkage is deepened, the new agglomeration of the KA VI as an 'innovation network' will be able to come into being and this tendency is shown in the result of this analysis. Then the optimal location strategy might be suggested through more intensive study on this change. Finally, considering the locational characteristics of the KA VI, there should be more examination to make an audio-visual industry complex in Korea out of the Seoul metropolitan area. According to this work, spatial linkage is important for the development and growth in the audio-visual industry. So if an audio-visual industry complex is to be built at a region that has no spatial linkage of the industry, it should be done after the intensive economic-spatial analysis in the context of this study.
