Abstract

Carl Ritter is recognized as the founder of modem geography. He had published the nineteen volumes of the Erdkunde until his death, since he published the first volume of the Erdkunde in 1817. This took partially includes the description on Korea. Although its amount is only 80 pages, it is of great significance to the studies of foreigners' recognitions of Korea and their attitudes toward Korea.

This paper aims to report the life and education of Carl Ritter and his background of thoughts, to clarify his geographical thoughts and systems of description, and inform his contribution to increases of knowledge on Korea.

Judging from the system of description of Erdkunde, Ritter regarded the earth as organic entity(organi&::he Einheit), the continent as individual unit(Lindersysteme). He divided continents according to horizontal and vertical dimension, examined its stems(Stamm) and branches(Glieder}. According to horizontal dimension, he counted numerical proportions of coastlines/surface area of each continent and considered degree of openness and isolation by it.

According to Ritter's viewpoint, Korea belongs to terrace land located between highland and lowland in Asia. The materials used to describe Korea was the geography 1:mks published in China and Japan, records of Jesuitic missionaries,

records of journeys of exploration, Hendrick Hamer s work, etc. He collected materials about Korea as much as possible, compared it. In the division of Korea the main features of the relief and drainage were described, followed climate, major products, fauna, flora, vegetation, statistical data, population, some historical events and finally a general summary. Comparative method was used as a new regional method of description. For example, he used it to explain geographical things and historical events which had occured in Korea and Italy. His comparative method was imparted to his disciple, American geographer, Guyot, and again did to the Japanese geographers in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. They had a great influence on Korean geographers such as Kim Kio-Shin.

Ritter's description of Korea is useful to understand how foreigners recognize Korea and his influence on German geogrphers such as Lautensach.
