대동여지도의 지명에 관한 연구 : 경기도 지명을 중심으로

Abstract

본고에서는 『대동여지도』에 수록된 경기도지역의 지명을 추출하고 각각의 지명들을 인문과 자연의 몇 가지 유형으로 분류한 후 유형별 특성을 파악했다. 경기도 지역의 지명을 군현별로 분류하여 분석한 결과, 인구가 많고 면적이 큰 고을에 지명이 많이 수록되어 있었다. 자연지명에서는 산지의 비중이 가장 높고 그 다음으로 하천, 고개, 島煥순인데, 평야나 湖诏

지명은 매우 적다. 인문지명에서는 행정 · 군사 · 교통과 관련된 지명이 많고 경제 · 문화와 관련된 지명이 상대적으로 적다. 인문지명의 분포를 지도로 작성하여 분석해 보면, 행정 관련 항목에서 고읍은 고려의 도읍이었던 개성을 중심으로 분포하고 있다. 군사 관련 항목에서 산성의 경우는 경기도의 서부지역과 남부지역에 밀집되어 있다. 교통 관계 항목에서 포구는 해안이나 조수가 작용하는 강 유역에 분포하고 있다. 이상의 사실들로 볼 때, 『대동여지도』는 19세기 후반 급변하는 국내외의 정세 속에서 국방 강화라는 군사적 목적에서 제작된 지도라는 것을 알 수 있다.

This study aims to analyze place names of Gyeonggido province in Daedongyeojido and to find out the typical characteristics of place names. The result of analysis of place names in prefecture shows that large prefecture in population and area have a lot of place namer. As for natural place names, the portion of mountains is high, the next are rivers, ridges, islands, specially the place names of plains and lakes are very poor. As for human place names, there are many place names about administration, national defence, transportation, relatively few place names about economy, culture. In the distribution of human place names, many old prefectures are located near the Gaseong(capital of Goryeo Dynasty). Also many mountain fortresses are distributed in western and southern area of Gyeonggido province. In the place names of transportation, almost ports are distributed near the seashore and the river valley affected by the tide. Finally, these facts shows that Daedongyeojido was made for national defense in the late 19th century when the international circumstances were suddenly changing.
