If the 18th century had been the century of critique, the 19th was that of construction of the
new. This meant that the 19th century had to seek to realize the desires, that had carried the
18th and the French Revolution, in the political realities. In this context, the problem of
religion enters into the center of thinking of the 19th century. New Christianism of Saint-
Simon, Humanity of Comte, Trial of return of medieval christianity by de Maistre and
Bonald, are its examples. In comparison, Guizot thought of the State as the organizer of
society. F.-A. de Chateaubriand and A. de Tocqueville tackled problems of religion while
accepting modern democracy. Chateaubriand considered christianity as moral of society.
Within the framework of aristocratic liberalism, religion played the role of realizing the
aristocratic values, or civic obligations, which refined democracy. Religion, that Chateaubriand
pursued, was moral of society which should refine desires of equality by democracy in
conserving liberty, and surmount individualistic isolation which comes from society of
interest. By contrast, Tocqueville talked about religion in general rather than christianism. For
Tocqueville, religion was a part of the social composition, with a specific function in the
democracy. He tried to propose the concept of democratic religion. He thought of religion as
means of refinement of democracy in historical movement, surmounting aristocratic limits in
Chateaubriand.
