소토코모리, 일본 밖을 떠도는 젊은이들 : 시대의 폐색으로부터 탈출, 혹은 신자유주의의 희생양?

Abstract

이 글에서는 현재 일본사회에서 문제가 되고 있는 소토코모리 현상에 대해 살펴보고 그것이 갖는 의미를 고찰한다. 소토코모리는 일본 밖, 특히 아시아로 나가 은둔(진성 소토코모리)하거나 장기간 아시아 각지를 떠도는 일본의 젊은이들(침몰형 배낭여행자)을 지칭한다. 어느 경우가 되었건 일본의 주류 사회, 혹은 규범화된 삶의 방식에 적응하지 못하거나 그것을 거부한 젊은이들이다. 여기서 말하는 일본의 주류 사회란 학력사회, 기업사회, 노동자 윤리로 짜인 전후 일본의 사회시스템을 지칭한다. 좀더 구체적으로 살펴보면 소토코모리가 되는 배경에는 청년기 이행에 실패하거나 경쟁에서 낙오한 사람들의 자폐적 도피, 방황하는 청춘의 자아 찾기, 일본적 모더니티가 초래한 폐색, 신자유주의적 고용 구조의 확산, 일본사회의 관계적 특수성 등 스펙트럼이 다양하다. 물론 이들은 서로 겹치며 일부 일본의 젊은이들로 하여금 아시아를 찾게 했을 것이다. 흥미로운 지점은 이 젊은이들이 향하는 곳이 아시아란 점이다. 이때 말하는 아시아는 근대화가 덜 되었고 분위기가 느슨한 동남아시아의 도시들이며, 아시아에 일본이 포함되지 않음은 물론이다. 일본적 모더니티의 안티테제로 설정된 아시아에서 치유와 구원을 구하는 일본 젊은이들의 태도에서는 분명 오리엔탈리즘의 혐의가 읽히지만, 소토코모리의 아시아 지향이 내포하고 있는 일본사회에 대한 비판의 가능성 또한 명백하다. 요컨대 90년대 이후 침몰형 배낭여행자의 등장과 최근 소토코모리의 출현은 한편으로는 불황과 구조조정 속에 일본 젊은이들이 느끼는 불안과 좌절에 덧붙여 전지구화가 일상이 되어 버린 고도 현대가 개인에게 끊임없이 강요하는 성찰적 자아기획의 압력, 나아가 동아시아의 압축적 모더니티가 초래한 혼돈이 작용한 결과라 할 수 있다.

This paper reviews and explores the group of young Japanese people who are referred to as sotokomori. Sotokomori are the young Japanese who migrate out of Japan into Asian cities in oder to lead an idle and secluded life (genuine sotokomori), or those who wander about Asian countries for an extended period of time (sunken backpackers). Whether they are genuine sotokomori or sunken backpackers, sotokomori are the people who either rejected or could not adjust to the way of life that has been established as normal in the post-war Japanese society. There are several social and personal backgrounds for them to become sotokomori; failure to bridge oneself from school to work environments, falling behind in competition, the quest for self-identity, suffocation from Japanese modernity, expanding neoliberal employment structure, and stress from personal relationships. What is interesting about sotokomori movement is the fact that their destinations are within Asia, especially the towns and cities of Southeast Asian countries that are less modernized and more relaxed in the atmosphere than Japan. Asia does not include Japan by definition of this context. There is a sense of orientalism among those young Japanese people who head out to the Asian cities in search of emotional healing and psychological salvations from the Japanese society, for these Asian cities supposedly symbolize the antithesis of Japans modernity. At the same time, the emergence of sunken backpackers since the 1990s and the recent rise in the number of sotokomori can be best understood as the epitome of their anxiety and frustrations toward Japans prolonged economic recession and industrial restructuring, which evidently have created highly-elevated pressure for reflexive project of self-making as well as the chaos caused by the compressed Japanese modernity.
