사량좌의 심성론 연구 : 선불교와의 관계와 '지각'의 문제를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 신유학의 사상적 전개에 막대한 영향을 준 사량좌(謝良佐)의 심성론을 선불교와의 관계 속에서 그의 지각개념을 중심으로 고찰하고자 한다. 기존의 연구 관점은 사량좌의 철학이 정호의 철학을 계승하여 이후 호굉 및 육구연과 사상적 연계성을 가진다는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 관점은 정호 철학과의 세밀한 대조 작업은 물론이고, 주희가 지적하는 사량좌의 선불교적 면모에 대한 충분한 고찰 없이 제시된 것이다. 신유학의 전개에 있어 사량좌의 사상은 심성론 방면에서 큰 역할을 하며, 그의 심성론을 조망하는 데 있어 선불교의 영향은 일차적인 고찰 대상이다. 성체심용(性體心用)으로 대변되는 그의 심성론은 선불교, 특히 홍주종계열의 작용시성(作用是性)에 대한 비판과 그에 대한 반정립의 성격을 가진다. 인간 의식[心]을 전적으로 본체인 성(性)의 작용(作用)으로 보는 홍주종과 달리, 사량좌의 성체심용은 그것을 현상 세계의 대상과 관계 속에서 드러나는 것으로 본다. 즉 그에게서 의식[心]은 일차적으로 대상에 대한 지각이외에 다른 것이 아니다. 이 점은 지각이 곧 인간의 현상의식임을 가리킨다. 그러나 다른 한편, 사량좌는 이 지각의 의식 과정은 본체, 즉 성(性) 또는 인(仁)이 드러나는 계기를 가진 것으로 보고, 지각이 인이 된다[知覺爲仁]고 주장한다. 이 점은 인간의 도덕의식을 지각을 통해 확보할 수 있다는 것을 나타낸다. 이러한 사량좌의 관점은 인간의 도덕성을 의식의 본체가 아닌 현상 속에 추구해야 한다는 이른바 이발 중심의 이론으로 귀결된다. 그리고 이는 현상(일상세계)에 대한 적극적 긍정을 표방하는 선불교(홍주종)의 관점에 도리어 근접하는 것이다.

This thesis mainly considers Xie Liang-zuo (謝良佐)s Theory of Xin-xing, which had a huge influence on the process of the philosophical development of Neo-Confucianism and its relationship with Zen Buddhism and the concept of Zhi-jue (知覺). Previous studies which distinguish the between the Cheng hao (程顥) and Cheng Yi (程頤) philosophies regard the philosophy of Xie Liang-zuo as succeeding Cheng Haos philosophy and led to Hu Hong (胡宏) and Lu Jiu-yuan (陸九淵)s school of thought. However, this perspective is presented without a meticulous verification process of Cheng Haos philosophy, and moreover without full consideration of Xie Liang-zuos Buddhist characteristics which Zhu Xi (朱熹) had pointed out while discussing his philosophy. Xie Liang-zuos philosophy plays a significant role in developing Xin-xings (心性) neo-Confucianist theory. To prospect his view precisely, contemplating the influence of Zen Buddhism is the most important subject to investigate. The main theory of Xin-xing (心性), which is referred to as xing-ti-xin-yong (性體心用), either criticizes and functions as the antithesis of Zen Buddism, particularly in relation to zuo-yong-shi-zing (作用是性) which was established by Hongzhu-zong (洪州宗). However, Hongzhu-zong considered human consciousness(心) as an operation of nature (性), Xie Liang-zuo saw it as something that can be seen only in relationship with the objective world. In other words, for him, human consciousness is regarded as nothing but as a perception or an awareness(知覺) towards the object in the phenomenal world. However, on the other hand, Xie Liang-zuo insists that the awareness (知覺) turns out to be benevolence (仁) since he believes that the benevolence which equally means to human nature (性) can be acquired only in the state of awareness. Viewed in this light, moral consciousness in human nature can be secured only through awareness. In conclusion, the viewpoint of Xie Liang-zuo on this issue emphasizes the phenomenal aspect of mind that the morality of human being should be pursued not from substance but from phenomenon. Ironically, it is more analogous to Zen Buddism, which advocated a positive affirmation to the phenomenal world, even though it had been criticized .
