재림주의와 '위대한 실망' : 윌리엄 밀러(1782-1849)와 유재열(1949-)을 중심으로

Abstract

최근 한국 그리스도교는 정통과 이단에 대한 시비로 몸살을 앓고 있다. 주류교단들은 자신과는 다른 신앙관을 가진 집단에 대한 이단 시비를 거는 등 현대판 종교재판을 가하는 어수선한 분위기를 조성하고 있다. 특히 상대적으로 진보적인 신앙관을 표방하는 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK)가 2013년 세계교회협의회(WCC) 총회를 부산에서 개최하는 것은 한국 그리스도교 역사의 중요한 사건이지만, 개신교 내에 일부교단들만 참석할 뿐이다.1) 대부분의 보수교단들은 WCC의 종교다원주의, 인본주의, 개종주의반대, 그리고 비평적 성서연구를 이유로 WCC라는 세계적인 교회연합운동조직을 비정통 혹은 이단이라고 폄하하고 있다. 또한 오늘날 한국사회에 커다란 파장을 일으키고 있는 1960년대 개신교내 신비주의운 동에 뿌리를 둔 소종파운동들이 개신교 주류교단들에 직접적인 피해를 끼치고 있어 신흥종파에 대한 경각심이 고조되어 있다.

Seventh-day Adventism is one of the most successful American native religious movement. The dramatic cultural unstability of mid-nineteenth century America prompted the Millerite movement, resulting in Seventh-day Adventism. William Miller, a farmer and Baptist layman, prophesied the world would end in 1843. His failed prophecies end in Great Disappointment on the part of Miller himself and his followers. His Premillennialism won followers' mind and by the 1860s Millerism developed into Seventh-day Adventist sect. At the threshold of the twentieth century, Korea embraced American Pentecostalism. During the period of the Japanese imperial colonial administration, a distinctive form of Christianity emerged. Charismatic leaders emphasized the significance of spiritual and mythical experience during revival meetings. In 1966, Yoo Jae-Yul at the age of 17 started to prophesy the Second-coming of Jesus Christ in 1969. He initiated a new religious sect, Tabernacle Temple movement. Like William Miller's case, his prophesy failed in great disappointment. Yoo Jae-Yul repented and bid farewell to his religious community. He persuaded his followers to rededicate about 70 churches belonging to Tabernacle Temple movement into Korean Presbytarian churches.
