폴 리쾨르의 상징이론의 관점에서 본 조나단 스미스의 신화이해

Abstract

모든 방법론은 한계를 가진다. 따라서 방법론은 연구에 타당성과 설득력을 제공하기도 하지만, 동시에 방법론을 선택한 사람의 시야를 제한한다. 제한된 시야는 연구의 효율성을 위한 불가피한 선택이므로 그 자체로서 문제가 되지는 않는다. 그러나 자신의 시야가 방법론으로 인해 제한되어 있다는 사실을 인지하지 못할 경우, 우리는 자신의 방법론을 절대화하고 더 나아가 자신이 선택한 방법론이 적합하지 않은 연구대상까지 그 틀로 재단하는 우를 범하고 만다. 따라서 우리는 어떤 방법론을 선택할 때에 그 방법론이 가지고 있는 철학적 전제와 인간이해의 타당성과 한계를 분명히 이해하고 사용할 필요가 있다. 조나단 스미스(Jonathan Z. Smith)의 이론이 엘리아데 이후의 종교학 연구 방향에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다는 사실을 부인할 사람은 많지 않을 것이다. 스미스는 그의 학문 활동 초기에는 엘리아데의 이론을 계승하고 비판적으로 발전하기 위해 노력했다. 그러나 1970년대 후반, 특히 Map is not Territory(1978) 이후로는 종교현상에서 드러나는 불일치(incongruity)에 대한 인식에 기초한 자신만의 종교이론, 특히 신화이론을 발전시켰다. 이 논문에서 스미스가 이후의 작업에서 핵심적인 역할을 하는 불일치(incongruity)의 개념을 소개할 때에, 사고를 일으키는 것은 불일치의 인식이다 (It is the perception of incongruity which gives rise to thought)라는 문장을 사용했다.

The purpose of this essay is to analyze and evaluate Jonathan Z. Smiths theory of myth from the viewpoint of Paul Ricoeurs hermeneutics of symbol. Ricoeurs hermeneutics of symbol describes the process of recovering the ontological depth of human beings, which the moderns lost and forgot. The most important step in this process is the stage of corrective critique. In the corrective critique, a subject finds its own illusion, which Ricoeur calls the Cartesian ego. The subject which escaped from this illusion finally sees the structure of his or her own being. Ricoeur shows a concrete picture of the structure of being through analyzing Freuds psychoanalysis and Hegels phenomenology of spirit. The analysis of Freuds psychoanalysis gives the subject the archaeology of the subject. Hegels phenomenology of spirit provides the subject with the teleology of the subject.
