인과와 도덕적 책임 : 행위와 부재 간의 비대칭성 주장에 대한 비판

Abstract

행위와 행위의 부재에 대한 도덕적 비대칭성 주장에 따르면, 행위의 결과가 실제 결과와 다를 수 없는 경우에도 행위자는 자신의 행위에 대해 책임이 있을 수 있는 반면, 부재의 결과가 실제와 다를 수 없는 경우 행위자는 행위의 부재에 대해 책임이 있을 수 없다. 이 논문은 스위치라고 불리는 인과 구조의 성격에 근거하여 행위와 부재 간의 인과적 비대칭성을 보임으로써 도덕적 비대칭성을 지지하고자 하는 논증을 비판적으로 살펴본다. 특히 스위치를 특징짓는 두 가지 인과 구조의 차이점을 밝히고 이 논증이 성립하기 위해 추가적으로 요구되는 주장의 문제점을 보인다. 또한 실제 인과 이론의 입장에서 이 논증이 주장하는 행위와 부재 간의 인과적 비대칭성이 성립하지 않음을 주장한다.

It has been claimed that when the outcome of an action or an omission would not have been different, an agent can be morally responsible for an action but an agent cannot be responsible for an omission. In order to defend this moral asymmetry claim, philosophers often appeal to some sort of causal asymmetry between actions and omissions. In this paper, I critically examine this asymmetry claim. More specifically, I examine Sartorios argument for the moral asymmetry thesis that appeals to certain causal characteristics of switches. I argue that the argument fails. I then analyze in terms of actual causation the causal scenarios that play a crucial role for the argument. It turns out that these scenarios do not support the argument either.
