도시를 짓는 말의 철학적 여정: 플라톤의 『국가』와 자기반성적 이성

Abstract

이 글은 『국가』의 도시 건설 서사는 동시에 독특하게 자기반성적인 로고스, 즉 철학적 이성의 자기 발견 여정의 서사로 읽을 수 있음을 제안한다. 『국가』의 이상도시는 언어로 만드는 도시이다. 그 중에서도 특히 논리적 필연성을 헤아리고 그에 대해 화자들이 서로 동의함을 확인하며 논의를 진전시키는 추론적 언어로 만드는 도시이다. 『국가』 화자들의 논의는 정의(正義)라는 문제의식에서 출발해 철인통치 도시가 이상적 도시라는 결론에 도달한다. 그러나 이 주장은 제5권에서 제7권에 걸친 긴 논의를 통해 소크라테스가 철학이라는 행위 자체를 추론적 이성의 한계를 넘어서는 직관의 성취로 규정함으로써만 완성된다. 그래서 역설적으로 『국가』의 정치적 주장을 추동하는 추론적 이성은 자신의 주장의 완결과 동시에 그 자신의 한계에 대한 자각에 이르게 된다. 추론적 이성작용의 성취와 한계를 동시에 보여주는 서사 구조 분석을 통해 『국가』의 현대적 의의를 재조명하고자 한다.

This paper suggests that the city-building narrative of Platos Republic doubles as a narrative of self-discovery by the philosophically inclined reason of its own innate limitations regarding philosophical knowledge. The city-building narrative of the Republic culminates in Socrates radical suggestion that political power and philosophy should coincide. Socrates completes this radical argument by characterizing the philosophers as those who come to the contemplation of the idea that no longer lends itself to rational discourses performed in the manner of the city-building speech shared between Socrates and his young interlocutors. The final philosophical knowledge depends on what Socrates calls, in contrast to rational deliberation (dianoia), noēsis-a deeply individual and fundamentally ineffable experience of cognition. Therefore, even as the city-building speech completes its argument for the beautiful city, kallipolis, where philosophers rule, the speech itself is revealed as an inappropriate medium for such cognition as it proposes to be the end of philosophy. The Republic presents us a philosophical journey of a rational speech that reaches a self-reflective understanding of the end it cannot but a t once aspire to and fall short of.
