분열문의 의미와 초점 후치사의 수의성

Abstract

(1)과 같은 한국어에 나타나는 분열문은 –것 분열문, 혹은 유사분열문이라고 불리우며 (2)와 같은 영어의 it-분열문이나 유사분열문/자유관계대명사(free relative)로 불리는 문장과 유사한 의미를 가진 현상으로 알려져 있다. (1) 존이 읽은 것은 모비딕이다. (2) a. It was Moby Dick that John read. b. What John read was Moby Dick. (3) a. John read Moby Dick. b. 존은 모비딕을 읽었다. 분열문이 가지는 중요한 의미는 i) 전체성의 의미(exhaustively)와 ii) 분열절에 의한 존재 전제(existential presupposition)의 의미라고 할 수 있다. (1, 2)와 같은 문장이 (3)의 일반적인 문장과 다른 점은 준호가 특정 시점과 상황에서 읽은 책의 전체 목록은 Moby Dick이 전부이고 그 밖의 다른 책은 없다는 총망라성의 의미가 있다는 것이다. 따라서 (2)의 문장에 (4)와 같이 준호가 Moby Dick 이외에 다른 책을 읽었다는 내용을 덧붙이는 것은 앞 절과 서로 상충되는 의미를 일으킨다. 둘째 의미는 준호가 읽은 것이라는 분열절은 준호가 뭔가를 읽었다는 존재 전제 (existential presupposition)를 발생시킨다는 점이다. 따라서 (5)에서와 같이 준호가 뭔가를 읽었다는 전제가 수용(accommodate)되기 어려운 경우 또한 전제를 만족시키지 못하여 적정한 분열문 발생이 어렵다 (4) #준호가 읽은 것은 모비딕이지만, 율리시즈도 읽었다. (5) #준호가 무언가를 읽었는지 안 읽었는지 모르겠지만, 준호가 읽은 것은 모두 모비딕이다. This study proposes that there are two distinct semantic types of Korean kes-cleft sentences, one an equative clause and the other a predicational clause in the sense of Higgins (1979). It is claimed that this distinction is based on the presence/absence of postpositions in the pivot phrase of a kes-cleft. The semantic and syntactic derivational process for each type is provided, which can capture the difference of these two semantic types and the two widely known semantic interpretations of cleft constructions, I.e., existential presupposition and exhaustivity interpretation.
