캐롤의 성적 욕망과 생태학적 사고: 핸슨의 『몬트레이 철학자들』

Abstract

미국의 대표적인 신화연구가인 조셉 캠벨(Joseph Campbell)은 정신적인 교감이 없는 결혼을 이단일 뿐만 아니라, 정신적인 간통(spiritual adultery)라고 혹평하고 있다(Campbell and Moyers 190). 또한 그는 사랑의 정신적인 충격을 의미하는 아모르(Amor)의 철자를 거꾸로 한 로마(Roma)를 사랑의 반대개념으로 삼아 중세기의 로마 가톨릭교회에 의한 정치적, 사회적 정략결혼과 유추하여 비판하고, 정신적 사랑과 육체적 사랑이 함께 해야 한다고 주장한다. 하지만, 그는 이러한 이상적인 사랑은 영국의 랜슬롯과 귀니비어(Lancelot and Guinevere)와 단테(Dante)가 소개한 파올 로와 프란체스카(Paolo and Francesca)의 불륜의 사랑이야기가 보여주듯이 항상 가능한 것이 아님을 보이고 있다. 이와 함께 캐벨은 육체적 욕정으로 아내를 얻은 남편을 한때는 영웅으로 칭하면서도 [그는] 더 이상 육체의 여신과 순결한 상태로 남을 수는 없게 되는데, 그 이유는 그녀가 죄의 여왕이 되었기 때문이다(No longer can [he] rest in innocence with the goddess of the flesh; for she is become the queen of sin)라고 말하기도 한다(Hero 123). 그런데 공교롭게도 켐벨은 그가 이십대 후반이었던 1932년 캘리포니아 몬트레이(Monterey)에서 간통까지는 아닐지라도 불륜의 사랑을 경험하였는데, 그 여인은 미국의 소설가 존 스타인벡(John Steinbeck)의 첫째 부인이었던 캐롤(Carol)이었다. 이 뿐만 아니라 그들과 함께 생태학적 토론을 했던 에드 리케츠(Ed Ricketts)도 유부남이었지만 수많은 여성들과의 스캔들로 유명했으며, 이 지역 생태시인 로빈슨 제퍼스(Robinson Jeffers)도 그의 아내인 우나 콜 쿠스터(Una Call Custer)와 칠년간의 금지된 사랑을 나누고야 결혼을 할 수 있었다. 특히 스타인벡의 당시의 소설 「국화」(The Chrysanthemum)와 『미지의 신께』(To a God Unknown)는 캐롤의 강한 성적 욕망과 그녀의 외도를 주제로 농후하게 다루가 있다. 그러면서도 인간의 욕정은 자연의 힘과 동일하다는 주제를 생태학적이고 범신론적으로 그려내고 있다.

In 1932, Joseph Campbell, a pioneer of mythology, visited Monterey accidentally while having a terrible time deciding on his career, meeting John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts. Coincidentally, they all shared Robinson Jefferss ecological philosophy-inhumanism, centered on astonishing natural beauty against human solipsism and the reason-oriented idea of the Western tradition. Meanwhile, Hansons The Philosophers of Monterey treats such an episode by using Carol (Steinbecks wife of the time) and Campbells illicit love affair. Given this, this paper aims to observe the book based on qualified historical data, discussing how Carols strong sexuality affected her husbands works-The Chrysanthemem and To a God Unknown, and integrating the three mens ecological thoughts into Jefferss. Lastly, I insist the research of their relationship during this period is significant in that the three young scholars of the time could develop the theories of their fields-literature, mythology. and biology helped by Jeffers consciousness.
