몸으로 증언하는 '포스트' 9/11 : 드니즈 우에하라의 『자만』

Abstract

드니즈 우에하라(Denise Uyehara)는 자신의 몸을 관객과의 소통의 매개체로 사용하며 몸의 정치학과 경계선 없는 정체성을 실현하기 위해 노력해 왔다. 아시아계 여성이자 양성애자로서 우에하라는 자신의 몸을 기표(signifier)로 적극 활용하여 인종적, 성적 정체성의 경계를 해체하는 작업을 시도해 왔다. 그러나 21세기 들어 우에하라의 공연성은 좀더 다양한 시각을 보여주는데 이는 정치적 현장에서의 생생한 육성을 증언의 형태로 무대에 불러들이는 작업이다. 현장성을 강화하는 이 같은 극 형태는 이미 애나 드비어 스미스(Anna Deavere Smith)를 비롯한 다큐멘터리 극작가들에 의해 활발하게 수행되어 왔을 뿐 아니라 다른 문학 장르의 소재로도 확장되기 시작하였다. 사실에 바탕을 둔 대본에 기초한다는 점에서 우에하라의 증언극(testimonial play)은 기존의 포맷과 유사하나 무대의 수행성면에서 다른 장르 및 공연과의 차별성을 보여준다. 그녀는 무대에서 자신의 몸과 연관된 정치적이고 역사적인 의미를 전경화 한다. 이를 위해 몸을 적극적으로 활용하며, 개인적 경험에서 비롯한 독백과 함께 비디오 아트와 다양한 테크놀로지를 차용하여 관객들과의 교감을 극대화 하며 장르간의 융합적(interdisciplinary)극 작업을 시도한다. 2003년 공연된 증언극 『자만』(Big Head)은 9/11과 그 이후(post)라는 시/공간을 배경으로 극도로 충격적인 재난 사건이 해석되어지는 개인적이고 공적인 영역을 탐색한 작품이다. 이를 통해 이 복합적 재난이 함의하는 정치적 이슈들을 제기하며 개인과 국가의 정체성의 위기를 진단하고 재점검한다.

This paper aims at researching testimonial play, Big Head by Denise Uyehara who has performed political issues including race, gender, and sexuality. Uyehara deconstructs the limits of written text and employs diverse technological objects on the stage of Big Head. She deals with conflicts of multicultural values and the backlash reflecting the disastrous fact of 9/11 in view of her subjective memory and personal history. Uyehara conveys fragmentary memories and trauma in her personal and family history, sends them out to the public sphere, and expands them to ethnic trauma negotiating the formation of a new identity. Through the performance, Uyehara diagnoses ethical and political crisis in America by exposing diverse terrains of trauma after 9/11. She employs the stage to share the experience of the audience from multicultural background and hopes it is the place of hope for the better world recovering from the trauma of catastrophe.
