제국의 시선들 사이에서: 19세기 말 조선의 문명 담론과 근대성 문제에 대한 일고찰

Abstract

본고에서는 서세동점이 본격화되는 19세기 말, 조선을 찾아왔던 서구인들이 남긴 여행기라는 장르에 대한 분석을 통해 재현/표상이 갖는 정치성의 사회문화적 의미에 대해 고찰한다. 이 시기 조선을 방문한 여행가들 및 개신교 선교사들이 남긴 텍스트들에 공통적으로 나타나는 것은 한국인들의 정신문화, 그 중에서도 무속(shamanism) 및 민간신앙에 대한 폄하와 왜곡이었고, 이러한 스테레오타입은 아무런 매개 없이 서로 베껴 쓰는작업을 통해 확대 재생산되었다. 하지만 조선을 문명의 가장 후진적 단계로 자리매김하는 폭력적 시선이 아무런 저항 없이 투과되는 것은 아니었다. 19세기 말 조선이라는 접촉지대(contact zone)는 여러 다양한 외래의 이질적인 시선 및 그 시선들을 모방하고 혹은 내면화하면서 만들어지는 토착적 응시가 만나고 부딪치고 서로 맞붙어 싸우는 문화 횡단(transculturation)의 공간이었다. 물론 그러한 역동성이 문명의 전형(典型)=서구라는 인식을 넘어서는 새로운 문명에 대한 상, 즉 기존의 문명을 극복할 수 있는 문명에 대한 성찰적 인식으로 나아가지 못했다는 것은 19세기 말 조선의 근대성의 또 다른 한계라고 해야 할 것이다.

The purpose of the manuscript is to analyze the genre of travelogue about Korea authored by Westerners at the end of the 19th century and to explore the sociocultural meanings of representation revealed in the texts. A commonality found in the texts written by Western travelers and Protestant missionaries was the disparagement of Shamanism and folk belief held by Korean people that symbolize the backwardness of Korean culture. This cultural stereotype quickly spread in part due to the tendency of the writers to copy one anothers reference to Korean backwardness. However, it is not that the malicious views of Korea as one of the least civilized nations in the world were accepted without resistance. Korea at the end of the 19th century can be viewed as a contact zone, in which transculturation took place: various foreign views of Korea bumped into and wrestled with native views that arose by imitating and internalizing the foreign civilization discourse. However, it is fair to recognize the limitation of contemporary Korean intellectuals, namely, their lack of reflection of new civilization that would go beyond conventional Western civilizations at the time. In this regard, the investigation of how discourse of civilization was appropriated at the end of the 19th century provides important implications to us in reflecting and exploring the modernity here and now.
