디아스포라론과 동아시아 속의 재일코리안

Abstract

이 글은 재일코리안의 역사와 현재 및 집단적 · 개인적 경험을 이해하는 개념틀로서 디아스포라론의 유용성과 한계를 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 지금까지 재일코리안을 이해하는 일반적인 시각은 일본 내 소수민족집단이나, 넓게는 초국가적 이주민의 시각이 있었다. 그러나 재일코리안은 정주국에 사회문화적으로 동화의 수준이 높으면서도 귀환할 수 있는 모국(현실적 또는 상상의)을 가지고 있다는 점에서 일본의 다른 소수집단과 다르며, 귀화를 거부하고 자발적으로 민족적 정체성을 유지해온 점에서 초국가적 이주집단의 틀로도 설명하기 어렵다. 반면 1990년대 이후 주목받아온 디아스포라론은 재일코리안을 정주국과 모국의 시공간적 경계를 넘어 형성되는 민족집단으로 특징짓고, 모국-디아스포라-정주국의 삼자구도 조건 속에 형성되는 이주와 정주의 역사 및 정체성에 대한 분석틀을 제공한다. 그러한 디아스포라론에 입각할 때 재일코리안 디아스포라는 왜, 어떠한 과정을 통해 디아스포라가 되었으며, 무엇이 지금까지 디아스포라적인 상황을 재생산하고 있는지를 고찰할 수 있게 된다. 그러나 이 글에서는 재일코리안 디아스포라의 특수성을 전통적인 디아스포라론의 삼자구도가 아닌, 동아시아의 전후 냉전의 역사에서 형성된 사자구도(적대적인 남북한-재일코리안-일본)의 구조에 두고, 재일코리안 디아스포라의 구체적인 삶과 정체성은 이러한 구조와의 관계 속에서 규정되고 변화해왔음을 지적한다. 나아가 이러한 관계를 구체적으로 이해하기 위한 방법론으로, 동일한 역사를 공유하는 단일한 집단정체성의 가정을 배제하고, 재일코리안의 디아스포라화에 대한 복수(複数)의 역사를 듣고 쓸 것을 제안한다.

This article aims to review the usefulness and limits of the theory of diaspora as a conceptual tool in understanding the history and the present, and the personal and group experiences of ethnic Koreans (Zainichi Koreans) in Japan. Neither the concept of ethnic minority nor transnational migrants fully captures the state of Zainichi Koreans; while they are highly assimilated to the host society culturally and economically, Koreans have kept their ethnic identity and nationality, retaining a strong emotional bond with their homeland. The conceptual framework of diaspora, focusing on triad relations of diaspora, host society, and homeland, can help us better understand the complex relationship of Zainichi Koreans with Japan (the host society) and two Koreas (homeland) as well as their identities. Yet a review of studies on Zainichi Koreans suggests that the theoretical framework of traditional diaspora needs to be reformulated to a four-party relationship in order to analyze how the competitive yet hostile relationship between two homelands shaped by Cold War politics in East Asia has affected Korean diaspora in Japan. To do this task, the article emphasizes the importance of listening to and writing multiple histories of various disaporic subjects on their experiences with the host society and homelands, and deconstructing the myth of monolithic group identity based on a shared victim history.
