베를린의 일본 음악유학생 연구: 1920~1930년대를 중심으로

Abstract

일본제국 시대에 동아시아에서 가장 많은 일본 유학생이 서양음악을 배우러 독일로 간 것은 잘 알려져 있지만, 몇몇 유명한 음악가의 연구를 제외하면 무명 음악가를 포함한 전체적인 사항은 연구된 적이 없다. 이러한 연구 상황에서 본 논문은 아카이브의 일차 자료를 통해 일본 제국시대 실제 베를린에서 유학한 일본의 음악인에 대한 대략의 윤곽을 그려보고자 한다. 본 논문에서 일본인 음악유학생을 연구하는 목적은 현재 일본 음악계에도 두드러지게 남아 있는 독일음악 수용의 뿌리를 거슬러올라가보고, 어떻게 음악유학생들이 일본과 독일을 연결하는 제국의 회로를 만들어내는지 고찰하는 것이다. 먼저, 음악유학생의 규모나 특징이 어떤 범위 내에서 형성된 것인지 알기 위해, 1920~1930년대 베를린으로 간 일반 일본 유학생의 독일 선호도 등 대략의 분위기를 탐색하고자 한다. 그리고 무엇보다 독일의 음악교육기관에 대한 이해 없이 유학생의 존재를 파악하기 힘들다고 생각하므로, 당시 대표적인 베를린 음악교육기관에 대하여 살펴보고, 누가 어디서 무엇을 언제 공부했는지 베를린 예술대학(Universitat der Kunste Berlin)에 소장되어 있는 아카이브 자료(Jahresbericht)와 외국인을 위한 독일어연구소(Deutsches Institut fur Auslander)의 문서를 바탕으로 서술하고자 한다.

It is well known that the Japanese people were the largest group among the East Asian musicians who had studied Western Music in Germany, especially in Berlin, during the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. However, the research has progressed around only a few famous musicians, and thus the whole dimension of such phenomena has been rarely researched. This study explores how the Japanese music students in Berlin was able to build an imperial cycle, which combines the Japanese Empire and the Third Reich, by analyzing German documents in the archive of the Universitat der Kunste Berlin and the Deutsche Institut fur Auslander an der Berliner Universitat.
