조선시대 안동 봉정사의 인쇄 문화에 대한 고찰

Abstract

본 연구에서는 안동 천등산에 위치한 봉정사의 인쇄 문화에 대해서 고찰하였다. 봉정사에서는 조선 후기에 다량의 불교경전이 한 시기 동안 집중적으로 간행되었으며, 불교경전 이외의 다양한 서적도 사찰에서 지속적으로 간행되었음이 확인된다. 현재 이 시기에 간행된 불교 경전 일부와 상당수의 간행 관련 사료가 현존하고 있다. 이러한 역사적 사실들과 사료들에 주목하여 봉정사의 인쇄문화사적 가치에 대해서 주목하고자 하였다. 연구방법은 봉정사의 개괄적인 역사적 상황과 인쇄 문화, 그리고 불경 간행으로 크게 두 주제로 나누어서 연구를 진행하였다. 그 내용으로는 첫째, 봉정사의 위치와 인접 지역, 그리고 각종 사료들을 살펴봄으로써 사찰의 문화 형성 배경과 전반적인 인쇄 문화를 살펴보고자 하였다. 둘째, 봉정사에서는 1769년 한 시기에 15종의 불교 경전을 간행하는데, 경전의 간행 배경과 그 성격, 그리고 간행 참여 인력 및 현존본 분석을 통해서 당시 봉정사의 불교경전 간행 문화를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 안동의 봉정사에서는 조선 시대, 특히 조선 후기에 상당히 다양한 전적의 간행 작업이 이루어졌음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 전적은 불교 경전에서부터 문집, 창의록 등 다양한 서적들이 포함되었다. 또한 서적 간행을 위하여 봉정사에서는 간역소가 설치된 경우도 상당 수 있었음이 확인되었다.

This study examines the printing culture of Bongjeong-sa Temple(鳳停寺) on Mt. Cheondeong(天燈山), in Andong. Throughout the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, numerous Buddhist scriptures were published extensively; notably, various books and documents were consistently published at Bongjeong-sa Temple. Buddhist scriptures published during this prolific period of time, along with various documents related to the printing culture of the temple, remain in the present and it is through these documents that this study focuses on the cultural value of printing at Bongjeong-sa Temple. This study focuses on two main ideas: 1) the general temple and printing history of Bongjeong-sa Temple and 2) the culture and history behind the printing of Buddhist scriptures. For the former, the formation of this printing heritage is examined through study of the temple's location and surroundings, in addition to historical documents related to the temple's printing culture. For the latter, as Bongjeong-sa Temple published fifteen versions of Buddhist scriptures in 1769 alone, this study will analyze the purposes for publication and common characteristics of published Buddhist scriptures, along with the various people connected to the publishing of Buddhist scriptures and other works of that period in time. Study results reveal that a significant amount of books and documents were published at Bongjeong-sa Temple in Andong, particularly during the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty. Published works varied in content, from the anthologies of Confucian scholars to Buddhist and historical texts. The publishing of fifteen versions of Buddhist scriptures, in particular, involved considerably large-scale undertakings; publishing houses were installed and various people participated in the high-quality publications of Bongjeong-sa Temple in 1769.
