<1872년 郡縣地圖>의 소장 현황과 장황 형태

Abstract

조선시대 관찬 군현지도집의 마지막 성과물로 평가되는 <1872년 군현지도>는 현재 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원에 소장되어 있다. 군현지도의 일부 책의(冊衣)에는 지도의 완성 시기가 1872년 3월에서 6월로 표기되어 있어 약 4개월이라는 기간에 전국적으로 지도 편찬 사업이 이루어졌음을 알 수 있으며 도별로 수합된 지도들은 총 461장에 이른다. 이전의 관찬 군현지도집의 형태는 도별로 묶어 책 형태로 편찬되는 것이 일반적이었다면 <1872년 군현지도>의 장황은 각 군현의 지도가 독립된 첩(帖) 형태로 되어 있어 주목된다. 지도의 장황 형태는 지도의 제작 목적이나 사용 방법을 밝힐 수 있는 중요한 단서가 되기 때문이다. 그러나 현재 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원의 <1872년 군현지도> 소장 상태는 원형이 아닌 개장(改粧)된 이후의 모습이다. 따라서 본고에서는 <1872년 군현지도>의 상태조사를 통해서 소장 현황을 파악하고 장황 형태의 원형을 복원하여 지도의 제작 목적과 실질적인 이용 방법을 추정하였다.

The prefectural and county maps of 1872 are the last product of Joseon government-led efforts and those are currently housed at Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute. The part of the map that shows the last products were completed in 4 month between March and June of 1872 and the collection comprises of 461 maps. They are notable for the way each region is painted on a separate sheet of paper, each of a different size and in a different style while previous maps compile as form of books. The bookbinding technique of the maps can be an important clue to fmd that they were produced for a single purpose and method of use. However, the 1872 maps of Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute possession are not the originals, but are recreations. Therefore, this study examined the purpose of cartography and method of using maps through preservation and restoration of the 1872 original maps.
