소득 불평등에 대한 주관적 평가: 미국 사회를 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 소득불평등에 대한 주관적 평가가 이루어지는 내적인 과정과 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 소득 불평등의 인식을 구성하는 세 요소로 구분하였다. 소득 불평등의 현수준, 정당한 소득불평등의 수준, 소득불평등의 주관적 평가가 그것이다. 소득불평등의 주관적 평가는소득 불평등의 현 수준과정당한 소득불평등 수준의 대비를 통해 이루어진다고 가정하였다. 즉 한 사람이 인식하는 소득 불평등의 현 수준이 그가 생각하는 정당한 소득 불평등 수준보다 크게 높을 경우 현재의 소득불평등이 지나치게 크다고 평가할 것이며, 반대의 경우 소득불평등이 지나치게 크지 않다고 평가할 것이다. 이러한 가정은 분석을 통해 지지되었다. 한편 사회경제적 지위가 높을수록 소득 불평등의 현 수준을 높게 인식하며, 정당한 소득 불평등 수준 또한 높게 설정한다. 본 연구의 불평등 인식 모델을 적용하여 부자와 빈자의 소득 불평등 인식을 비교해 본 결과, 부자들이 현재의 소득 불평등 수준이 높다고 인식함에도 소득 불평등에 대해 덜 부정적으로 생각하는 이유는 그들이 생각하는 정당한 소득 불평등 수준이 다른 사람들보다 높게 설정되어 있기 때문이다.

This study demonstrates that attitudes towards income inequality partly result from a rational calculation based on reality perception, in which self-interest intervenes. A conceptual framework is proposed in which income inequality is subjectively evaluated through a comparison of perceived inequality and legitimate inequality. Perceived inequality leads to either negative or less negative evaluation depending on the level of inequality that a subject thinks is legitimate. Those of high socioeconomic status perceive income inequality as larger, set legitimate inequality at a higher level, and evaluate inequality less negatively than do those of low status. Legitimate inequality set at a higher level relative to perceived inequality is the reason the rich evaluate inequality less negatively than do the poor, though the rich recognize the unequal reality more accurately than do the poor.
