21세기에 들어와서 고유가 시대가 지속되고, 자원 민족주의 등으로 인해 국가간 에너지자원을 확보하기 위한 경쟁이 더욱 심화되면서 에너지 문제가 핵심정책과제로 부상하고 있다. 우리나라에서도 저탄소 녹색성장의 일환으로 원자력 발전의 비중을 대폭 상향 조정하는 계획이 수립되었으나, 국내 전력생산의 핵심 에너지원임에도 불구하고 현재 원자력 발전용 우라늄 원료는 전량 수입에 의존하고 있다. 최근 우라늄 자원의 국제 가격 급등으로 우라늄 원료의 안정적 수급방안에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다.
국제적으로 전력 생산량 중 원자력 발전이 차지하는 비중이 증가하는 시점에서 국내외 우라늄광 개발을 통해서 핵연료물질을 확보하게 되면 급격한 가격 상승에 대비하고, 전량 수입에 의존하는 우라늄원료의 일부를 국산화하여 수입 대체함으로서 안정적인 우라늄 확보에 기여할 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 국내에 매장되어 있는 저품위 우라늄광상 중에서 충청북도 괴산군에 위치한 우라늄광 시료를 대상으로 효율적인 산침출조건을 확립하기 위하여 다양한 조건에서 실험을 수행하였다.
침출 실험 전, 대상 시료의 광물학적 특성을 파악하기 위해 단일 입도별 화학조성(chemical composition) 분석 및 동일 시료로 한국광물자원공사에서 SEM-EDS 및 EPMA 분석한 결과를 검토하였다. 그 결과 우라늄 함량이 낮았으며, 함우라늄 광물로는 Uraninite, Brannerite,Francevillite가 확인되었다.
우라늄 침출 특성을 파악하기 위해 pH, 온도, 입도, 고액비, 산화제, 황산제이철의 첨가량, 전처리(열처리, 마이크로웨이브처리) 유무 등을 매개변수로 하여 우라늄 침출에 미치는 영향을 비교하였다.
pH는 1.0이 적합하다는 결과를 보였고, 온도는 높아질수록 침출율이 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다. 입자 크기가 작아져도 침출율 향상을 가져오지 않았으며, 시료 대 증류수의 비율은 1:1로 하는 것이 가장 침출율이 좋았다. 산화제로는 이산화망간을 사용하는 것이 침출율이 높았고, 황산제이철은 초기에 1.5g을 첨가하는 것이 더 효율적이었다. 침출 실험 전 시료의 열처리는 우라늄 침출율 향상에는 영향을 미치지 못하였으나, 마이크로웨이브처리는 단체분리도를 향상시켜 침출율을 증가시켰다.
