Abstract
Backgrounds: Gait performance is essential element to let people live an ordinary life especially in the elderly. In addition, sarcopenia with aging affects the gait performance and can cause serious injuries or even death. In this study, we investigated whether resistance exercise using elastic band could result in an alteration of body composition, physical strength elements and gait performance.
Methods: Thirty men and women aged over 80 were participated in this study from a local community welfare center. Participants were divided into two groups, exercise and control group. Exercise group participated in resistance exercise using elastic band for 12weeks, 2 days a week for 50minutes. Before and after this exercise program, body composition, physical strength elements and gait performance were measured.
Results: The results of this study were as followed: 1) There were no significant changes in body compositions according to participate in exercise program for 12weeks. 2) Among SFT(Senior Fitness Test), there were significant time and group interaction effects in Chair Stand Test(p<.01), 8-Foot Up and Go Test(p<.01) and Leg Extension Test(p<.04). 3) There were no significant changes in gait performance according to participate in exercise program for 12weeks.
Conclusion: This study found that resistance exercise program had beneficial influences on strength of lower extremity but body composition and gait performance in older people aged over 80. Thus, we concluded that resistance exercise training could be an effective way to promote strength of lower extremity on the older people aged over 80.
Future studies that should cover the correlation between gait performance and exercise program that improve the body composition and physical strength elements would be the objective data for reducing the risk of fall in older people.
