도자 표면연마를 통한 촉각적 교감

Abstract

닳아서 부드럽고 광택이 나기도 하는 사물은 늘 연구자의 마음을 사로잡았다. 연마된 사물에 대한 개인적 호감, 나아가 인간이 그것들을 보편적으로 좋아할 것이라는 직관으로 시작한 도자 연마작업을 시작한지 벌써 6년여 시간이 흘렀다. 흙과 함께하는 시간은 연구자에게 놀이의 유희를, 전시를 하는 동안 관객과의 소통을 통해서는 일하는 보람을 주었다. 흙을 매개로 한 연구자의 행위는 일과 놀이의 양면적 특성을 지닌 것이었다. 이 연구는 연구자의 닳아 부드러워진 것(연마된 것)에 대한 기호와 관객들의 호감에 대한 직관적인 판단으로 시작하게 된, 촉각성을 위시한 작품의 구체적인 의미 찾기이다. 자료조사를 통해 촉각과 그러한 사물의 실체성에 대한 의문의 해답을 찾고, 인간과 사물의 상호 교감이 만드는 의미들을 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 성질로 바꾸는 것을 시도하였다. 연구작품의 이해를 위해서는 촉각의 이해와 제작 동기인 닿아 부드러워진 사물, 연마된 사물에 대한 특성을 살펴보는 것이 우선적으로 필요하다 생각하였다. 그래서 논문의 초반은 생리학적 측면과 문화 상징적 측면에서의 촉각을 살펴보며, 촉각이 직접적이며 실체성을 가진 것으로 다른 감각과 마찬가지로 중요한 감각임을 이야기하는 것으로 시작한다. 다음 장에서는 연마된 일상 사물의 특성에 대한 이해와, 그러한 촉각적 특성을 도자예술에 이용한 작가 사례를 살펴보았다. 도자예술에서 연마 촉감을 주제로 삼음으로써 촉감이 단순히 작품의 마무리를 위한 요소가 아닌, 주된 구성 요소로서 다룰만한 가치가 있음을 보여줄 것이다. 이러한 전반부를 토대로 후반부는 연구자 작품제작에 관한 내용을 전개하여 작품의 이해를 도울 수 있도록 하였다. 후반부의 앞부분은 비교적 새로운 기법이라 할 수 있는 백자소지 고온소성 후 연마 기법을 다루었고, 후반부 뒷부분에서는 연구작품에 대해 설명을 하였다. 이번 연구를 통해 그간 해왔던 연구자의 작업에 대한 의미를 발견했고 앞으로 전개할 작업에 대한 의지를 확고히 하게 되었다. 이번 연구가 작품의 제작과 감상에서 그동안 우리가 중요시해왔던 시각적 접근을 넘어 촉각적 접근 또한 적극적으로 고려해볼 필요가 있음을 인식하게 하여, 다른 이들의 표현과 감상의 폭을 넓히는 계기가 되었으면 한다.

Soft and shiny worn out things always touched the researcher's mind. By personal favorable impression, and intuition that, people might like those round things generally, the researcher started polish ceramics. It has been 6 years, to doing grinding works for ceramics. The time with clay gave pleasure and helped to find the researcher's life worth living by communication with visitors during his exhibitions. The researcher's work with clay was not only his job but also, his play. This research is about finding meanings of tactual-sense-emphasized ceramic works, made by personal favorable impression and visitor's good impression about worn out things. The research finds substance of tactual sense and tactual-sense-emphasized ceramics by collecting data. It also helps to easily understand meanings of interactions of people and things. For general understanding of research works, we preferentially need to know what is tactual sense and features of soft, worn out, and polished things. Therefore, this research starts to study tactual sense in the aspect of physiology and cultural anthropology. It says tactual sense is firsthand and substantial, and very significant like other sense organs. In the next chapter, it finds out and understand features of polished ordinary objects. And then it studies artists who already applied those tactual features in their ceramic works. Therefore, the study concludes that tactual sense in ceramic work is not only for finishing work, but also one of significant component of ceramic work. Based on early chapters of this study, late chapters explain the researcher's works and production process. It helps to comprehend those works. First parts of late chapters deal with grinding after grand feu of w hite porcelains, that is a relatively new technique, and last parts of late chapters explain about researcher's works. This research made the researcher find very important meanings of his works until now, and gives motivation and firm intention for works in the future. Hope that, this study makes people aware of importance of tactual approach like as visual approach, in ceramic production and artwork appreciation, and so broaden other's expression and appreciation.
