Abstract
This paper examined the relation between regionalism and marriage values by conducting depth interviews with 22 university students and graduate students in Daegu, South Korea. Daegu city has been known as the place in which conservatism and tradition strongly remain among cities of Korea. In interviews, the majority of young citizens who were raised and born in Daegu city showed negative recognition on this conservative and traditional images of Daegu. This recognition on city was linked with their feelings for gender roles, individuality and old generations traditional and patriarchal idea and behavior related to family. They seemed like trying to create new attitude towards family planning and marriage different from their parents or grandparents.
Through interviews, there were some findings. First, preference for childrens gender reflects the life plan or personality of young individuals. Strong preference for son like old generation seems to be the thing of the past. Young individuals see patriarchal atmosphere of Daegu negatively and they were seeking the way to build gender equal family and society. Second, the attitude towards premarital cohabitation is very positive. All participants except some committed Christian believers agreed to premarital cohabitation. Young individuals recognize that society has no full understanding or liking for premarital cohabitation, but they explained merits of it as prevention of divorce in the future. Third, it was not possible to figure out how exactly recognition for regionality or regionality itself influence marriage values of young individuals. However experiences of gender roles, gender inequality, and patriarchal customs seem to have partial influence on development of ideas related to family, gender and marriage. Young individuals mentioned their experiences in family and society as lessons for future.
This research conducted depth interviews on young students in university and graduate school. This can cause the potential of bias in results according to the lack of variety of participants job, financial background, and educational background. Further research with more variety of occupation, education and gender is needed as a solution.
