- Abstract
- High heel shoes are the indispensable elements of modern fashion that is commonly worn by women. However, wearing high heel shoes has many drawbacks on various parts of human body, such as muscles and joints, in the biomechanical point of view. To mitigate such problems, it is necessary to analyze the effects of various design elements of high heels on human body, deviating from simply comparing and analyzing high-heel gait with normal gait. Instead of plainly recommending to abstain from frequent wearing of high heel shoes, one should develop ergonomic-oriented high heel shoes to minimize accompanying drawbacks in biomechanical perspective. Although high heel shoes are considered as one of the major issues resulting in high rate of knee osteoarthritis in women, attempts to reduce the pains on knee joints are still insufficient compared to those on feet. Thus, as an attempt to design high heel shoes based on ergonomics, this study observes gait patterns with various shapes of high heel shoes and analyzes change in the pattern according to variable design parameters other than the height of heels. Based on the study, an optimal design guide for high heels that can minimize disturbances on knee is suggested.
In conducting the study, experiments on gaits of participants wearing different types of high heel shoes were conducted by using motion capture, and the collected data were analyzed. In this process, it is observed that high-heeled gait has different gait pattern of the center of pressure from that of normal gait. Also, the gait pattern of the center of pressure and the ankle joint patterns changed in accordance with the change made in design parameters of the high heel shoes. In order to thoroughly investigate the effect of wearing high heel shoes on the knee, the knee moment is calculated and examined by conducting a simulation on musculoskeletal system. By analyzing the simulation, the optimal design variables are decided that effectively reduce the adverse effects on the knee.
