공장말: 인도네시아 내 한국 기업의 언어 사용과 권력

Abstract

본 연구는 다국적 기업의 초국가적 생산 현장에서 나타나는 언어와 의사소통의 문제를 인도네시아에 진출한 한국 기업의 사례를 통해 탐구하려는 시도이다. 보다 구체적으로 이 논문은 인도네시아 한국 기업의 생산 현장에서 나타나는 한국인 직원들과 인도네시아 직원들사이의 의사소통의 특징과 구조를 기술하고, 그러한 언어 사용을 통해서 어떻게 공장의 권력 구조와 체제가 유지되고 재생산되는지 그 과정을 분석한다. 특히 이 논문에서는 공장말 이라고 불리는 한국인들의 인도네시아어 사용의 특징을 살펴보고, 이러한 공장말이 한국인직원들과 인도네시아 직원들 사이에 규범적으로 요구되거나 당연시되는 상호작용적 체제를구성하고 있음을 논의한다. 이때 생산현장에서 일상적으로 나타나는 의사소통 방식과 그것을 매개하고 정당화하는 가치와 이데올로기는 거시적 차원의 생산 과정 통제와 권력 관계가구체적으로 작동하는 보다 미시적인 정치 과정과의 연결지점을 보여준다. 따라서 이 논문은한국 관리인들의 제한적인 언어능력에도 불구하고, 공장 내의 언어 사용에서는 적합한 것으로 받아들여지는 과정과 이유를 한국인 직원들과 인도네시아 직원들 사이의 상호작용을 통해서 살펴보고, 나아가 그것을 정당화하는 언어이데올로기와 정체성의 정치를 살펴본다.

In this paper, I explore the relations between language and power in a multinational corporation, by examining a Korean manufacturing plant in Indonesia. More specifically, I analyze a specific style of language use and communication called factory talk, as used and practiced in this transnational setting. I analyze the grammatical features of factory talk as well as its communication structure, while focusing on the roles of Indonesian managers as mediators who can liaise between Korean and Indonesian workers in the factory. My analysis of their verbal interactions and language ideologies reveals that the Koreans factory talk serves as an interactional regime, a nexus between a macro–level factory regime and a micro-level everyday political process in this multinational corporation. In this paper, I pay close attention to the ways in which the Korean staff members factory talk becomes legitimate despite their truncated competence. Furthermore, I discuss how the Koreans language ideologies and their stereotypes of Indonesian workers mediate and justify their language use, while producing and reproducing power relations between Koreans and Indonesians in the transnational workplace.
