Abstract
Most researches on Arabs and Muslims in Korean society are through looking

at migrant workers, interethnic marriages, studies of the Arabic language and

the Halal food market. While the Interest in Arabic culture in Korean society

has been increasingly growing yet their portrayal in Korean media and popular

culture demonstrates a little knowledge as generalizations and stereotypes

appear routinely within cultural contents, particularly in films.

This study centers around films that feature Arab and Muslim characters.A

qualitative analysis of five films from five different genres such as drama,

indie, comedy, action, and historical fantasy can reflect Koreans' various

perceptions of Arabs and Muslims. The study focuses on three themes.

The first is(Homogenization) of Arabs, Muslims and Middle Easterns. The

second is Orientalism, an image of an erotic and uncontrollable Arabs, and the

third is Immigration. The study used literary analysis and qualitative research,

including content analysis of films released between 1997 and 2017 and the

characteristics based on the gender, color, nationality of the actor, language

and intonation, the use of traditional attire, association with terrorism , hostility

and aggression , and whether the characters are depicted as criminals and / or

victims. The results have shown a typical and shamelessly typical depiction of

3

Arab and Muslim figures that match the theme of homogenization and

Orientalism. Two other movies
provide strong commentary on immigration,

and racial discrimination. The conclusions suggest that stereotypes are evident

in Korean films and contribute to the prominent perception of Korean society

in consuming such negative image.
