Abstract
Recently, the notion of a system has received much attention in the science teaching and learning and in scientific inquiry. This study analyzed pre-service teachers' understanding of the link between a system and the law of conservation through a written questionnaire. The results of this study are as follows: First, participants had difficulty in classifying the system and used limited keywords to define the system. Second, many participants answered that a prerequisite for the law of conservation is an external force, but they rarely mentioned any additional prerequisites for the law of conservation. Third, participants did not consider the conditions for the law of conservation when they identified the components of the system concerning problems on the law of conservation. Educational suggestions on learning the law of conservation are given and discussed based on the results of the study.
