금태칠 기법의 현대적 활용에 의한 금속 작품 제작 연구

Abstract

현재까지 전해져 내려오는 많은 공예의 기법 중에서도 금속공 예와 옻칠공예는 둘 다 오래된 역사와 전통을 가지는 분야라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이 두 가지 공예 기술의 결합으로 금속 기물 에 옻칠을 하는 금태칠이라는 공예기법이 생겨났다. 청동기 시대 에 중국에서 최초로 시작된 것으로 알려진 금태칠 기법은 한국, 중국, 일본 등 옻칠이 주로 생산되는 지역을 중심으로 발전을 거 듭해왔다. 또한, 금태칠기는 금속재료의 견고함과 옻칠도막의 방 식성 등 두 가지 장점이 있기 때문에 현대공예가들의 작품제작 에도 활발하게 사용되고 있다. 본 논문의 주제는 위와 같은 금태칠기의 역사와 활용 사례를 한국, 중국, 일본의 유물과 한국의 현대공예작품 등을 통해 알아 보고, 그 연구의 결과로서 금태칠 기법을 활용한 금속 기물을 제 작하는 것이다. 논문의 구성을 살펴보면 첫 번째로 서론에서는 금속재료가 갖는 색의 한계를 극복하기 위해 금속작품의 표면에 옻칠을 입히는 금태칠 기법을 연구하기로 한 배경과 연구동기, 그리고 연구방법 및 범위에 대하여 서술하였다. 본론에서는 첫째, 가장 오래된 금태칠기 유물이 발견된 것으로 알려진 중국을 시작으로 한국과 일본의 금태칠기 유물을 차례로 소개하였고, 둘째 다양한 옻칠 기법이 작품에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지 한, 중, 일의 과거 유물에서부터 현대공예가의 작품에 이 르기까지 살펴보았다. 세 번째로, 한국의 현대 금속공예가 중에 ii 서 금태칠 기법을 작품제작에 활용하고 있는 두 명의 작가 사례 를 알아보았다. 작품연구는 주로 금속공예 기법으로 형태를 제작하는 조형 연 구와 옻칠공예 기법으로 색과 무늬를 표현하는 표면처리 연구, 두 가지로 나누어 진행하였다. 본격적인 작품 제작을 시작하기 전에 금속과 옻칠이 잘 결합되는지 알아보기 위해서 금태칠 기 법의 샘플 연구를 선행하였고 이를 토대로 작품 제작에 활용하 고자 했다. 금속공예 기법 면에서는 주로 판금성형과 은땜접합을 이용하여 형태를 완성하였다. 이후 완성된 금속 작품에 부분적으 로 옻칠을 함으로써 금속과 옻칠 두 가지 재료의 색과 질감대비 를 강조할 수 있는 기물을 제작하고자 하였다. 결론에서는 금태칠 기법을 활용하여 기물을 제작하며 얻을 수 있었던 기능적, 조형적 성과에 대하여 서술하고 이 기법이 금속 공예가들의 작업에 활용될 수 있는 가능성에 대하여 논하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 본 논문의 연구를 진행하면서 미진했던 부분 과 앞으로의 과제에 대하여 서술하였다.

Lacquer crafts and metal crafts both belong to the craft fields with long history and rich connotation. In the field of metal crafts, there is a kind of crafts that is used to brush lacquer on metal objects, which is the metal made lacquerware. Although the technology of metal made lacquerware has a long history, it has not been paid much attention since ancient times. With the slow pace of urban life, natural lacquers from nature and metal products that can be used for a long time become popular. Moreover, in the field of handicraft all over the world, the metal made lacquerware has also attracted the attention of a 64 number of artists who specialize in making metal made lacquerware. Consequently, my research is conducted on this topic of studying the history and current situation of metal made lacquerware, analyzing the lacquer crafts and techniques, and making metal made lacquerware works. In the course of the study, the history and status quo of metal made lacquerware have been understood firstly, then compare the history and status quo of China, Japan and South Korea, as well as the similarities and differences in techniques. Because the metal made lacquerware crafts lies between the metal crafts and the lacquer crafts, there exists a present situation that neither the metal craft artists nor the lacquer crafts artists understand both the crafts thoroughly. Thus, after studying the historical and present situation as well as the techniques, the paper aims to refine the technique from the lacquer crafts and apply it to the metal crafts field.
