The January Jasmine Revolution in Egypt: a turning point for re-thinking Feminism and the notion of public sphere for Egyptian women

Abstract

The beginning of the year 2011 was marked by unexpected and remarkable events that swept the Middle-Eastern region. Under the rule of authoritarian regimes for decades, the people of Tunisia and Egypt rose against their respective governments, a movement which spread to other countries in a short period of time. The awakening in Egypt was especially a subject of much debate and coverage, with the active and significant participation of women in the mobilization and organization of the demonstrations in the Tahrir Square in Cairo. These movements have been interpreted in various ways, from the rise of a novel civil society in Egypt, to the empowerment of women, especially Muslim women, within the Egyptian society. For the purpose of examining the Revolution and its implication and impact for Egyptian women, this thesis will explore the traditional concepts of civil society and feminism to re-apply them adequately to the phenomenon in Egypt., with an emphasis on the role that religion, Islam, plays in these movements. This thesis concentrates on the potential that the Middle-Eastern awakening has brought to light, how people have managed to resuscitate their engagement to social participation. The objective is to direct our attention to the divergence of participation methods in civil society, besides engaging oneself to the political realm. The increase in studies in women, the emergence of new technology (video logs, social networking sites, etc) and the discovery of new usage for traditional means (such as writing, literature, etc) for social and political purposes constitute the core elements of womens movements today in Egypt and elsewhere, and will also be the key aspects that this thesis will examine, in the context of the changes that we are still witnessing today in the country.

(국문초록) 2011년 초, 세계는 중동 지역에 일어난 놀랍고 뜻밖의 사건들을 목격하게 되었다. 튀니지 및 이집트 인들은 수십 년 동안 통치를 해오던 권위적인 정부에 항거하여 일어섰으며, 이 운동은 빠른 시일 내에 다른 나라들로 퍼지게 되었다. 카이로의 타흐리르 광장 내에서의 시위를 집결시키고 준비함에 있어서 여성들의 역할이 특히나 중대한 의미를 가졌던 이집트의 운동은 특히 여러 논의와 보도의 대상이 되었다. 이 운동들은 이집트에서의 새로운 시민사회의 상승, 여성들, 특히 무슬림 여성들의, 자율권 확보,와 같이 다양하게 해석 되었다. 이집트 혁명과 혁명이 이집트 여성들에 가져다 준 영향에 대한 고찰을 목적으로 이 논문은 시민사회와 페미니즘의 전통적인 개념을 다시 살펴보며, 특히 주된 종교인 이슬람의 역할에 역점을 두고, 이집트의 현상에 다시 적용해보고자 한다. 이 논문은 중동의 혁명이 지닌 잠재력과 사회적 참여에 대한 노력을 소생시켰다는 점에 중점을 둔다. 이 논문의 목적은 정치적 범위에서의 참여를 제외한 시민사회 참여를 이루는 다양한 방법을 모색해보는 데에 있다. 여성에 관한 연구의 증가, 새로운 기술의 발달 (비디오 일지, 소셜 네트워킹 등), 또한 사회적, 정치적 목적을 위한 전통적인 방법의 (글, 문학 등) 새로운 활용에 대한 발견이 오늘날 이집트, 그리고 타국가들 내 여성들의 운동의 중심을 이루고 있다. 이는 또한 오늘날 이집트에서 우리가 엿볼 수 있는 변화의 맥락에서 이 논문이 검토하고자 하는 중대한 측면이기도 하다.
