dc.description.abstract | Phonetic approximation models to speech perception claim that non-native speech sounds
will be either perceived as a native phoneme, a new phoneme or a non-speech sound based on the similarity of acoustic cue values in the speech signal with those values that occur in the native language. The main goals of this thesis are to determine if a particular phonetic approximation model, the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM), can accurately predict the perception of Korean stops by non-trained monolingual native North American English speakers, and to provide both new word-medial stop acoustic cue data and perception data for use in PAM, which is lacking in the literature. PAM accurately predicts that English speakers perceive Korean word-initial lenis and aspirated stops as homorganic voiceless stops, and Korean word-initial fortis stops as homorganic voiced stops. Due to the relative scarcity of word-medial data, new acoustic cue data for Korean and English word-medial stops was created. An experiment was performed to provide new perception data for English speakers' perception of Korean word-medial stops. English speakers perceived Korean word-medial lenis stops as homorganic voiced stops, and Korean word-medial aspirated stops as homorganic voiceless stops. Korean word-medial fortis stops were perceived mostly as voiced, though considerable variation was found across participants. These results were shown to be predictable by PAM if it was assumed that Korean word-medial fortis stops were being perceived as a new phoneme. Due to the descriptive nature of PAM, an Optimality Theoretic analysis that is compatible with PAM is provided as a partial model to perception behaviour witnessed in the word-medial perception experiment. | - |
