20세기 영국의 현대 작곡가인 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)은 뛰어난 작곡가이자 피아니스트, 지휘자이다. 브리튼은 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695) 이후 침체되었던 영국 음악을 국제적으로 끌어올려 새로운 부흥기를 마련하게 하였다. 그는 다양한 장르의 음악을 작곡하였는데, 그 중에서도 100여곡이 넘는 성악 작품들로 큰 주목을 받았다. 그는 문학적 감수성이 뛰어나 수준 높은 시들에 자신만의 독창적이고 감동적인 가곡들을 썼고, 성악가들에게 시와 음악의 완전한 이해를 요구한다. 브리튼은 20세기 여러 복잡한 음악적 어법을 배제하고, 조성체계 안에서 시어의 효과적인 표현을 위해 복조(bitonality)와 다조(polytonality)를 씀으로써 조성의 모호성을 추구하였다. 본 논문에서는 브리튼의 생애에 문학적, 음악적 영향을 끼친 오든(Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907-1973)의 시집 『look, Stranger!』(1936)에서 영감을 얻어 작곡한 최초의 피아노 반주 연가곡<On This Island, Op.11>에 대해서 살펴보았다. 브리튼과 오든의 삶을 통해 그들의 작품경향에 대해서 살펴보고, <On This Island, Op.11>가사와 선율 구조를 중심으로 리듬, 화성, 작곡 기법 등으로 연구하였다.

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), who was a great composer, pianist and conductor in the twentieth-century, provided a new revival of the English music after Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Britten created many different genres of music; however, he gained his fame mostly from his vocal music that numbers over a hundred. Owing to his literary sensitivity, Britten was particularly ambitious and careful in his choice of the poem . The poems Britten has chosen for his songs always reflect his outstanding knowledge of literature, and a complete understanding of the poems is expected of the singers in a performance. Britten excluded the complex musical expression of the 20th century and pursued an harmonic obscurity through bitonality and polytonality in order for effective expression of poetic language. This study has observed <On This Island>, Brittens first song -cycle written for voice and piano and inspired by Wystan Hugh Audens collection of poem 『look, Stranger!』(1936). Additionally, the lives of Britten and Auden along with the lyrics of this cycle have been observed in view of an understanding of their compositional styles. Finally, the musical structure of the songs- the rhythm, harmonic and the melodic structure and other compositional devices, has been discussed in an attempt to obtain a better interpretation of the work.
