- Abstract
- Royal tombs of the Joseon dynasty served as a space to perform sad and happy ceremonies, namely, state funerals and sacrificial rites. A royal tomb is comprised of a tomb area characterized by the burial mount, a shrine for sacrificial rites, and the entrance area containing the Jaesil(齋室). Past research on royal tombs have been focused mostly on the visible upper areas, ceremonial objects found in shrines, and architectural features.
This paper examined books on the enshrinement of royal tombs during the late Joseon dynasty, with a focus on the tomb of Yeongjo. The deceased kings were buried with burial accessories known as myeonggi(明器) and bokwan(服玩). Here, bokwan generally refers to clothes and cosmetic tools. In addition, it includes yuseo(遺書), meaning books left behind by the deceased. Books enshrined in royal tombs are evidenced by the mention of book box(書冊樻) in Gukjang Dogam Uigwe(國葬都監儀軌) and Salleung Dogam Uigwe(山陵都監儀軌).
The state funeral of Yeongjo organized by Jeongjo in 1776 was the first funeral of a king held in accordance with Gukjo Sangrye Bopyeon(國朝喪禮補編). This paper analyzed the furnishings of Yeongjos tomb based on the rules of Gukjo Sangrye Bopyeon, and examined whether or not the royal tombs of the 17th to 18th century contained books left behind by the deceased. The books enshrined in Yeongjos tomb were selected by Jeongjo himself, who also designated the traditional mounting method and position of the royal carriage for the funeral procession.
