Abstract
Opinions were divided on the first university press of Korea in previous studies. It was both a matter of data, but also a matter of how to define the the university press. This article studied the first university press in Korea by the newly introduced material. Previously, Boseonggwan which was run by the Boseong Special School founded in 1906 was considered as the first university press, or Yeonhui Special School Press which published Choi Hyun-bae"s Korean Grammar in 1929 was also considered. However, they were not university press and were inactive.
Next came Ewha Womans University Press, which was founded in 1949. But this article first argues that Seoul National University Press founded in 1947 was the first University Press in Korea. SNUP published its first book, the Korean translation of Atomic Energy in the Coming Era by David Dietz in 1948. In the preface of the book, the president Chunho Lee stated that the University Press was launched in 1947. Seoul National University also ran a press facility at its newspaper division, which can also be considered part of the university press. It also published the Korean translation of a part of Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy by Schumpeter in 1948. Thus, SNUP could be considered the first university press in Korea.
