바닥 작업을 통한 공간 변화와 환대에 관한 작품 연구

Abstract

This thesis examines the transformations that occur in a space through the use of 'floor-pieces'. I took a personal interest in the physical basis of the 'floor' as the starting point of the work. The floor is narrowly interpreted as the bottom aspect of an inner space. More broadly the land itself–as well as the soil–is the foundation and starting point on which one can be oriented. Through the addition of floor-pieces the entire space is transformed including our understanding of the floor itself that posits a space with a newly defined meaning.

The main material used in the work is linoleum. This material was chosen to draw out a new, unfamiliar appreciation from objects familiar in everyday life. The use of linoleum refers to an interior space that becomes a boundary separating the inside from the outside. Paradoxically however, if a structure made of linoleum is deliberately exposed or moved to an outdoor space, the contrast between the inside and outside emerges.

There are two main types of work. The first was the partitioning and expansion of space through repetition and movement using linoleum. By laying linoleum on the floor of the exhibition hall, the space may be perceived as an individual's room. As such the boundary between public and private areas has been blurred. Secondly the exhibition hall is reoriented as space for hospitality by creating a "sitting space" in normal form. I find that creating floor-pieces is akin to creating a space to invite someone. Through the active deployment of hospitality, the audience becomes a part of the exhibition space. Moreover, through this process, the artist and the audience interact on an equal, horizontal plane with each other as guests and owner-inhabitants.

본 논문은 바닥 작업(floor-piece)을 거쳐 발생하는 공간의 변화모습을 고찰한 것이다. 본인은 공간을 기반으로 하는 요소 중 물리적 기초가 되는 바닥(floor)에 대한 관심을 작업의 출발점으로 삼았다. 바닥은 좁게는 내부 공간의 밑면이지만, 넓게는 토지, 지구 그 자체로 어떤 존재 자체가 위치할 수 있는 토대이자 시작점이다. 바닥 작업을 통해 나타나는 새로운 모습은 바닥을 포함한 공간 전체의 변화를 만들어내고, 새롭게 규정된 의미의 공간을 제시한다.

작업에 쓰인 주된 소재는 장판(linoleum)이다. 익숙한 일상성으로부터 생소한 감상을 이끌어 내기 위해 선택한 재료이다. 일반적으로 장판은 실내를 의미하고, 안과 밖을 구분 짓는 경계의 표시가 된다. 그래서 역설적으로, 장판으로 만든 구조물을 의도적으로 노출시키거나 야외 공간에 옮겨 놓으면 안과 밖의 대비효과가 도드라진다.

작업의 방식은 크게 두 가지다. 첫 번째로는 장판을 이용한 공간의 구획과 확장 그리고 복제와 이동이다. 전시장 바닥에 장판을 깔아 공간 일부를 개인의 방처럼 인식하게 만듦으로써 공적영역과 사적영역의 경계에 대해 질문해 보았다. 또한 바닥을 수직적으로 분할하고 구획함으로써 생성되는 공간의 의미변화를 형상화했다. 그리고 집 내부 바닥을 복제해서 다른 장소에 옮겨 놓았을 때, 바닥이 본래 가지고 있던 장소의 맥락이 그대로 전달되는지 관찰해 보았다. 두 번째로는 평상 형태의 앉을 자리를 만듦으로써 전시장을 환대(hospitality)의 장소로 채우고자 했다. 바닥 작업을 한다는 것이 누군가를 초대하기 위한 자리를 만드는 일과 닮아있음을 발견했다. 환대라는 동사적 태도를 통해 관객은 전시 공간의 일부분이 되며 이 과정으로 자연스럽게 작가와 관객은 서로가 손님이자 주인으로서 수평적으로 상호작용 할 수 있기를 기대했다.
