dc.description.abstract | This thesis is to analyze the characters of Pachinko written by Min Jin Lee to find
out what the writer thought about the life of immigrants. Min jin Lees Pachinko is a feature-length family history novel about the Japanese immigrants of the Seon-ja family. So far, research on this work has been focused on the fact that it depicts the life of Zainichi. However, Pachinko is a character-oriented novel, as is generally the case with family history novels, so it is a novel that needs to be studied with a focus on character analysis. Although this novel deals with the story of Zainichi, the Zainichi in this novel is not a typical Zainichi. Also, the central characters of this novel, Seon-ja and Go Han-soo, are very hybrid characters. They are characters in which traditional and modern perceptions are intertwined. It seems that the spatial change of immigrants who crossed the border was projected onto the character of the reconciled person through temporal hybridity. The success of Seon-jas son Mosess pachinko business and grandson Solomons choice to stay in Japan shows the importance of survival and the country of residence for the second and third generations of immigrants. have meaning Solomon renounces his American citizenship and decides to remain in Japan. He does not rule out the possibility of naturalization in Japan. In a word, Min Jin Lees pachinko is a narrative in which strong realist men triumph over weak ideological male characters. Seon-ja and other female characters love and support strong and realistic men. These are Go Han-su, Moses, and Solomon. The weak ideological male figures are Isaac and Noah. Strong male characters, including female character Seon-ja, prefer work that realistically earns money to educate their children, rather than being good and right to survive in their new settlement as immigrants. In this respect, Minjin Lees Pachinko is not simply a novel depicting the life of Zainichi, but a work depicting a universal narrative of immigrants. | - |
