Abstract
Daily-mean time series of the atmospheric variables observed by the buoys of Japan Meteorological Agency are compared with the corresponding time series of European Center for Medium Range Forecast (ECMWF) 1000 mb data for one winter of 1 Dec. 1983-29 Feb. 1984. On the basis of the comparison the formulas of converting the ECMWF data to that of the ocean surface are derived, and the distributions of winter-mean air temperature and specific humidity are obtained over the seas around Korean peninsula. Sensible and latent heat fluxes on the ocean surface are calculated using the bulk formula. Sea surface winds are also computed using the so-called Cardone model, and the distributions of surface wind stress and wind stress curl are obtained from the wind. -from Authors
