한국 여성의 가족가치관과 출산 의향, 2010-2020

Abstract

이 연구는 현대 한국 사회의 급격한 가족 구조 변동이 가족가치관의 변화와 맞닿아 있다는 인식에서 출발하여 한국 여성들의 가족가치관의 변화 궤적을 추적하고, 나아가 가족가치관이 출산 의향에 미치는 영향을 확인하였다. 여성가족패널조사 3-8차 웨이브를 활용하여 다음의 세 가지 분석을 시행하였다. 먼저, 탐색적 요인분석과 확인적 요인분석을 통해 가족가치관 변수를 생성하였다. 다음으로, 성장곡선모형을 통해 가족가치관의 변화 궤적과 그 영향 요인을 살펴보았다. 끝으로, 가족가치관이 출산 의향에 미치는 영향을 패널 로짓 확률효과모형으로 검증하였다. 주요 분석 결과를 요약하자면 아래과 같다. 첫째, 한국 여성들의 가족가치관은 가족형성, 결혼제도, 개인행복의 세 가지 변수로 요약될 수 있다. 둘째, 한국 여성들의 가족가치관은 2010년부터 2020년까지 전반적으로 탈전통화되는 양상을 보였다. 셋째, 여성들의 가족가치관은 교육수준에 따라 체계적인 차이를 나타냈다. 고등학교나 대학교를 다닌 여성들은 중학교 이하의 교육을 받은 여성들에 비해 결혼과 자녀 양육에 대해 상대적으로 약한 지향을 가지고, 결혼 제도의 필요성을 낮게 인식하며, 결혼 관계보다 개인의 자율과 성취를 중시하는 경향이 더 강했다. 또한 대학원을 다닌 여성들도 중학교 이하의 교육을 받은 여성들에 비해 결혼 관계보다 개인의 자율과 성취를 중시하는 경향이 상대적으로 강했다. 넷째, 시간에 따른 가족가치관의 변화 궤적 역시 교육수준에 따른 체계적 차이를 보였지만, 그 양상은 가족가치관의 세부 영역에 따라 혼합되어 나타났다. 다섯째, 한국 여성들의 가족가치관은 출산 의향에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 그 양상은 가족가치관의 세부 내용에 따라 복합적이었다. 결혼과 자녀에 대한 전통적 태도, 그리고 동거, 성관계, 출산과 양육에 있어 결혼이 전제될 필요가 없다고 보는 태도는 모두 높은 출산 의향과 연관이 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 한국 사회에서 가족의 변화를 이해하는 데 있어 중요한 함의를 던진다. 한국 여성들의 가족가치관은 전통으로부터 점점 더 멀어졌지만, 그 양상은 단일한 방향으로 나타나지 않았다. 가족가치관이 세 차원으로 분류되며 각 차원마다 변화의 양상이 다르게 나타났다는 이 연구의 분석 결과는 가족을 둘러싼 가치관에는 본질적으로 다양한 차원이 있으며, 그 변화 역시 일관된 방향으로 일어나지 않음을 보여준다. 다음으로, 여성의 가족가치관과 그 변화 궤적이 교육수준에 따라 서로 다른 양상을 보였다는 것은 여성의 교육이 가족 변동에 중요한 영향력을 행사하는 요인임을 시사한다. 마지막으로, 가족가치관에 따라 출산 의향에 차이가 있었다는 점에서 저출산에 대응하는 일련의 노력에 가족가치관이 중요하게 고려되어야 함을 알 수 있다. 특히 가족에 대한 높은 개방성, 다시 말해 결혼을 통한 전통적 가족형성 방식을 따르지 않는 대안적 가족에 대한 유연한 사고가 높은 출산 의향과 연관되어 있었다는 점은 가족에 대한 개방적 태도를 증진하는 것이 출산 의향 제고에 기여할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다.

This article demonstrates the ten-year changes in family values of Korean women and explores how family values are related to their fertility intentions. Using waves 3-8 of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (N=32,412), a three-fold analysis was conducted. First, latent variables of family values were generated via exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Next, a growth curve model was used in order to track changes in family values and their correlates. Lastly, a random-effects model of panel logistic regression analysis was used to examine how family values are related to fertility intentions. The key findings follow. First, the three latent variables of family values of Korean women were Family Formation, Marriage System, and Individual Happiness. Second, there was a decline in the support of Korean women for traditional family values from 2010 to 2020. Third, the distribution of and changes in Korean womens family values varied by their educational attainments. Women with higher educational backgrounds generally had less inclination toward family formation or the marriage system and valued individual happiness over marriage. Fourth, the family values of Korean women were associated with their fertility intentions. Believing that one should marry and have children at an early stage in life was positively correlated with higher fertility intentions. Also, believing that one can cohabitate, have sexual intercourse, and have children outside of marriage was positively correlated with higher fertility intentions. These results imply that the changes in family values occur in a set of diverging conditions. Multiple sub-dimensions of family values can change in various ways by different causes. Education may influence these changes, but its influences on them can vary. The results also suggest that paying close attention to family values can shed light on dealing with the current ultra-low fertility in Korea. Flexible attitudes towards the family system may contribute to higher fertility intentions.
