부정자본론: 사회적인 것과 상징적인 것

Abstract

이 연구는 부르디외의 자본 개념을 집중 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 다음 세 작업을 수행할 것이다. 첫째, 부르디외 자본 개념의 내용과 특이성을, 그 이중적 속성을 중심으로 고찰한다. 둘째, 그의 상징자본 개념을 탐구한다. 상징자본은 사회적 인정을 획득함으로써 어떤 자본이취하는 형식(form)으로서, 그 형성과정을 가리키는 상징적 변형(상징자본의 사회적 구성)의 논리를 해명하기 위해 부르디외가 원용한 뒤르케임의 토템분석과 프로이트의 부인(Verneinung) 개념을 검토한다. 마지막으로, 부르디외의 취향분석과 예술장/문학장 분석에서 특징적으로 발견되는부정적인 것의 관점에 주목한다. 부르디외에 의하면 취향은 선호가 아니라 도리어 혐오의 능력, 즉 무언가를 부정적으로 배제할 수 있는 능력이다. 또한 예술자본은 사회적으로 부정적 가치들(가난, 고통, 질병, 광기, 죽음)이 예술적 성취와 함께 축성되어 만들어지는 경우가 있다. 양자를총칭하여 나는 부정자본이라 부르기를 제안한다. 이 논의를 통해 부르디외 사회학에서 사회적인 것이 상징적인 것, 그리고 부정적인 것과 맺고 있는 깊은 연관의 의미를 성찰해 볼 것이다.

This article aims at investigating in deep the concept of capital as the nucleus of the Bourdieusian social theory. For this, it takes analysis in three steps. First, I argue that the singularity of Bourdieusian concept of capital lies in the emphasis on the psychological aspect of the capital. That is, the capital appears not only as the energy of the social but also as the object of desire attracting the social agents. Second, I attempt at clarifying hisconcept of symbolic capital which is not one type of many capitals but a specific form that any capital takes when it gets social recognition. Finally, focusing on the perspective of the negative, prevalent in Bourdieusian analysis of the taste and artistic capital, I argue that themost imporst form of symbolic capital can be called negative capital.
