탐색적 요인분석의 오·남용 문제와 교정

Abstract

요인분석은 사회과학에서 널리 사용되는 기법이기도 하지만 연구자들이 분석과정에서 필요한 결정들을 빈번하게 잘못내리는 기법이기도 하다. 본 논문에서는 요인분석을 수행할 때 어떠한 결정들이 필요하고 어떻게 결정하는 것이 바람직한지에 대하여 논의하였다. 특히 요인분석의 잘못된 적용이 대부분 요인분석을 주성분분석의 틀 속에서 이해하기 때문이라는 관점을 취한다. 따라서 이 두 방법의 통계적 차이점을 살펴보고 주성분분석의 틀에서 요인분석을 해석할 때 어떠한 문제가 있는지를 분석하였다. 이 논문은 또한 자료 적합방식, 적합도 지수, 요인의 수의 결정방법, 결측치와 범주변수들의 처리에 대한 이슈들도 논의하였다. Though the factor analysis is widely used in social science research, researchers make frequently unreasonable decisions when conducting these analyses. The study reviews and recommends which decisions must be made when conducting factor analyses. This study contends that one of the main reasons of the misuse is because researchers understand exploratory factor analysis(EFA) in the frame of principal component analysis(PCA). The paper provides methodological and statistical comparisons between two methods and the consequences of interpreting EFA results in the frame of PCA. This article also address the issues of data fitting method, fit indices, choosing number of factors, and treating missing data and categorical data.
