변이신체 표현 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 변이신체에 관한 사유와 경험이 퍼포먼스적 조각으로 실천되는 모습을 서술한다. 변이신체는 특정한 정체성을 가진 신체가 타자와의 결합을 통해 새롭게 구성된 다중체다. 인간, 자연, 인공물, 공간 등이 모두 신체를 가진다는 전제에서 출발하여 여러 지식 체계와 수행으로 하나 이상의 실체를 획득한 혼종적 존재를 의미한다. 퍼포먼스적 조각은 변이신체를 구현하는 예술적 방법론이다. 조각에서는 퍼포먼스의 속성을, 퍼포먼스에서는 조각의 속성을 동등한 층위로 이끌어 내 언제나 다음 순간으로의 이행을 결과물에 함축시킨다. 이러한 표현 방식과 이미지는 본인의 작업에서 지속되어 왔다. 재료들은 유동적인 성질을 가진 신체가 선택되어 인위적인 조작이 가해진다. 그리고 예측하지 못한 상황들이 전개된다. 신체에는 생장 · 생식 · 자극 반응의 가능성이 있어 안정적으로 닫혀있던 이전의 속성과는 다른 양식을 만든다. 작업이 진행될수록 저마다의 세계와 연결된 신체는 완결을 담보하지 않고 의도를 넘어 계속해서 변이와 확장을 거듭한다. 퍼포먼스적 조각으로 만들어진 변이신체는 하나의 고착된 이미지에 머물지 않는다. 다양하게 움직이면서 임의적인 정보로 존재한다. 특정 시점에서만 일시적인 질서나 균형을 포착할 수 있고 수행에 의해 언제든, 어디서든, 무엇으로든 변형될 수 있다. 이와 같이 논문에서 소개하는 작품들은 어떤 생태나 조건 또는 어느 세계나 시간에서도 변할 수 있는 가능성을 가진다. 수많은 맥락 속에서 규칙이 적용되지 않는 재료가 무수한 겹의 행위를 채우는 작업이 되는 것이다.

This paper deals with how the ideas and experiences of the variant body are materialized into performative sculptures. A variant body is a concept of newly formed multiple bodies by combining a body with a specific identity with the body of others. Starting from the premise that all human beings, nature, artificial objects, and spaces, etc. have a body, it represents a mixed being that obtained one or more substances through multiple knowledge systems and execution. Multiple bodies are the image of a variant body. They are a metaphor for multiple, complex, and polymorphic objects. Performative sculpture is an artistic methodology to materialize a variant body. Sculpture draws the property of performance to the same level as its own while performance does the same to the property of sculpture, always implying the transition to the next moment in their final output. Such expressions and images have continuously appeared since my past works. A body characterized by fluidity is chosen for the material where artificial fabrication is inflicted. It then leads to an unexpected situation. A body has capabilities to grow, reproduce, and respond to stimuli, creating a new mode that is distinct from the properties of its past that were stably closed. As the work progresses, the body connected with its world does not guarantee completion but continues to repeat variation and expansion beyond the artists intention. The variant body created as performative sculpture does not stay in a single fixed image. It exists as random information that moves in a variety of ways. It can capture a temporary order or balance, changing itself into any form through execution regardless of time and space. The works introduced in this study feature multiple bodies that have potential to change in a way natural objects and artifacts are mixed and mutated by combining each others bodies, regardless of the ecological system, condition, world, and time they are put to. The body, a material that connotes plasticity and temporality and is not subject to rules in numerous contexts, becomes a work that fills the performance, an act of countless layers.
