주변적 발화에 의한 장소성의 해체 및 소생 가능성 연구

Abstract

In this study, the 'Expression of Marginality is presented as a methodology of mine served to deconstruct places in its larger sense (sites, bodies, digitalized images) and to revivify its meaning; in this case in my video-based works. This methodology focuses on alternative contexts or forms against centralist ways of thinking. Not only it aims to show the castaway beings or things from our world through their own respective ways, it also aspires for an epicene balance by re-examining clichéd subjects in a new perspective. Through its redundancy which leads to the effect of différance, the Expression of Marginality tries to emit non-linearity, all-at-onceness, uncertainty in a sense that no fixed proclamation exists, as well as irreproducibility. It fights against mass medias tendency to overconsume and categorize others especially through linear, singular, fixed and representable viewpoints. The various subjects I elaborate on whether they are women or places, are changed with deconstruction and recombination processes so that they can become something evasive, hybrid. Certainly enough all things are bound to be represented as images and owned to an extent. Nonetheless within the new context they are present I aim to alleviate this issue as much as I can. The complex interactions that take place inside and between my works could reveal in real time that audiovisual images themselves are insufficient to fully present things, no matter how intensely they bombard our senses.

The deconstructed places are regarded in this thesis as ruins. I try to (re)dig places or bodies that have been ruined, furthermore to eventually read the word ruins as holding some positive possibilities yet to be exposed. In order to deal with both real and virtual ruins without taking pre-established oppressive, consumptive stances, there is also a need to use the medium in a flexible manner. In its course I came to realize a fundamental difference between my theme and how visual media usually works. Whilst the video is a medium based on time, it is actually a series of sequence gathered in a linear form through the process of editing; hence albeit its apparent flexibility and ever-changing quality, the video ends up being one singular and final time-sequence. Consequently this study not only shows the semantic development of marginality, but also my various researches on inserting real times non-linearity to the edited temporality, with a minute modulation of multichannel or multimedia approaches.

이 논문에서는 중앙집권적 사고에 대항할 수 있는 대안적 형식을 주변적 발화라는 방법론으로 제시한다. 그리고 그것에 의해 장소성을 해체하고 그 의미를 소생시키는 작업을 영상 기반의 다매체 연구로 모색하고자 하였다. 이때 내가 정의하는 장소란 물리적 터뿐만 아니라 몸, 그리고 디지털로 굴절된 이미지 등의 상징적 장소들을 포괄한다.

주변적 발화는 중심으로부터 외면되었던 변두리의 대상들을 드러내는 것을 목표로 한다. 그 뿐만 아니라 주변적 발화는 대중매체로 인해 상투적으로 변질된 대상들을 재맥락화 하는 방식을 모색하고, 그 안에 침잠해 있던 새로운 면모를 수면 위로 끌어올린다는 취지인 점에서 양성적인 균형을 지향한다. 주변을 주변적으로 말하는 동어반복의 메커니즘이 야기할 수 있는 차이를 전략 삼아, 미디어에서 특정 대상을 소비하고 유형화 하는 데에 일조하는 선형성, 단일성,확정성과 재현가능성 등에 맞서 비선형성, 동시다발성, 불확정성과 재현불가능성을 내세우려 한다. 나는 대상들을 해체와 재조합의 메커니즘으로 변환 및 변이시켜, 완벽하게 포착될 수 없고 뒤섞인 무언가로 거듭나게 만들기를 의도하였다. 어떤 이미지이든 재현과 소유의 영역에 종속됨을 완전히 벗어나기란 불가능하지만, 주변적 발화는 해당 현상의 완화를 목표로 한다. 작품 내외의 복합 작용을 통해 성취될 수 있는 이러한 발화는 일련의 시청각 이미지들이 가하는 폭격이 그 안에 등장하는 대상을 온전히 대변하지 못한다는 사실을 실시간으로 감각하게 한다.

나는 해체된 장소성을 폐허라는 개념어로 드러내고자 한다. 폐허를 주변적 발화를 통해 (재)발굴하고, 끝내 긍정적인 가능성을 지닌 것으로 다시 읽히도록 하려 한다. 현실과 가상을 막론하고 소비의 대상으로 전락한 폐허들을 억압적이지 않게 다루기 위해서는, 매체의 사용방식도 유연할 필요가 있다. 이러한 지점에서 나는 영상매체와 연구주제 간의 본질적인 차이점을 발견했다. 영상은 시간을 기반으로 둔 매체이므로 유동적이고 변화무쌍한 특징들을 보이지만, 편집 프로세스를 거쳐 선별된 단일한 최종 시간 길이만을 가시화 한다는 점에서 태생적으로 주변적 발화와 차이가 있다. 따라서 나는 각각의 작품의 의미적인 층위들을 고민하는 동시에, 각종 매체실험을 통해 현실 시간의 비선형성을 영상의 시간 안으로 들여올 방법들을 다채널 및 다매체의 조율로 면밀하게 탐색하였다.
