Abstract

Throughout her life, Park Kyung-ri, as a writer, faced the looming threat of war and depicted the Korean society and history of the wartime in her novels. Her literary works can be divided into three stages: early short stories, mid-length novels, and the later Land series. Her masterpiece, The Land, delves into the stories of rural villagers migrating to cities during the urbanization process after the Korean War and the 6.25 War, providing a profound examination of social issues through the transformation of Korean identity and life. This novel is set against the backdrop of rural areas and social reality in Korea, primarily addressing issues of poverty and social oppression. The Land has exerted significant influence on Korean literary history and is considered one of Koreas representative literary works. Meanwhile, the early short stories transcend the writers personal realm and delve into broader themes. In the mid-length novels, themes evolve from personal farewells and encounters, sorrows, and joys to encompass a deeper interest in society and the nation. Furthermore, the significant position occupied by Park Kyung-ris novels in the literary world serves as a bridge connecting the aforementioned works. This interconnectedness is evidenced by the many stories and settings from the novels being repurposed in The Land. The study of Park Kyung-ris novels can have a profound impact not only on research centered around The Land but also on exploring the essence of Park Kyung-ris literary world. This study delves into the phenomenon of escaping from spaces frequently experienced by female characters in Park Kyung-ris novels. The aim of this research is to explore the impact of such phenomenon on womens lives and the establishment of their subjectivity, as well as to satisfy the curiosity regarding its relevance to Park Kyung-ris real-life experiences. Through this investigation, the study seeks to offer a fresh perspective to the study of Park Kyung-ris literature. The term escaping is a concept derived from Deleuze and Guattaris notion of deterritorialization, which represents the act of a group or an individual rejecting imposed constraints and breaking free to find their own subjectivity. Chapter 2 analyzed the portrayal of domestic spaces by the writer Park Kyung-ri in a negative way. The domestic space was depicted as a place of oppression for women, where only shadows remained, and where men exercised control and dominance. Chapter 3 delves into the analysis of Curse of Kimss Daughters, through the character Yongbin, exploring her journey of escaping the hometown multiple times and breaking free from psychological dependence to grow into a stronger woman. The act of leaving the hometown reflects Yongbins transition from being ensnared by romantic fantasies, religious beliefs, and romantic relationships to maturing into a more resilient individual. In contrast, those who fail to break away from the hometown or become engrossed in religion and love face the consequences of their tragedies. Chapter 4 focused on the market space. In the works of this period, it was observed that female characters transition from spaces with predominantly intimate characteristics, such as homes and hometowns, to spaces with more public attributes, such as markets and the nation. Through the analysis of other works, it becomes apparent that women not only escape from restrictive confines but also break free from the whirlpool that limits their self-identity. This process of escaping from spaces can be interpreted as a rite of passage for the growth of female agency. Although we currently inhabit diverse spaces, our sensitivity to these environments tends to be paralyzed, and our interest wanes. Realizing that our actions are indeed influenced by our surroundings, we can begin to contemplate other aspects of life beyond the constraints of our present spaces. This realization serves as the starting point of this study.

박경리는 평생 전쟁의 위협을 받은 세계와 대면하는 작가로서, 전쟁기의 한국 사회나 역사를 소설에 담아낸다. 그의 문학 작품은 크게 초기 단편소설, 중기의 장편소설, 그리고 후기의 토지 시리즈로 3단계로 구분할 수 있다. 대표작인 『토지』는 한국 전쟁과 6.25 전쟁 이후의 도시화 과정에서 농촌에서 도시로 이주하는 촌민들의 이야기를 다루며, 한국인의 정체성과 삶의 변화를 통해 사회적인 문제들을 심도 있게 고찰한다. 이 소설은 한국의 농촌 지역과 사회적 현실을 배경으로 하며, 가난과 사회적 억압 등의 문제를 주로 다루고 있다. 『토지』는 한국 문학사상에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 한국의 대표적인 문학 작품 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 한편 초기의 단편소설들은 대체로 작가의 개인적인 영역의 문제를 초월하여 다루고 있으며, 중기의 장편소설은 개인의 이별과 만남, 슬픔과 기쁨을 넘어서 사회와 국가에 대한 관심으로 발전해왔다. 이어서 박경리의 문학세계에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 장편소설은 앞서 언급한 작품들과 서로를 이어주는 역할을 한다. 이점은 장편소설들의 많은 이야기와 설정이 토지에 다시 재활용되는 것으로도 확인된다. 박경리의 장편소설 연구는 『토지』를 중심으로 한 연구뿐만 아니라, 박경리 문학의 본질을 탐구하는 연구에도 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본고는 박경리의 장편소설 중 여성인물들이 빈번하게 경험하는 공간 벗어나기 현상을 탐구한다. 이러한 현상이 여성의 삶이나 주체성 확립에 미치는 영향과 작가 박경리의 현실체험과의 관련성에 대한 호기심을 해소하기 위해 이 연구가 진행되었다. 이를 통해 박경리 문학 연구에 새로운 시각을 제공하는 것이 본고의 목표다. 벗어나기란 들뢰즈와 가타리가 소개한 탈주선 개념을 변형하여 사용한 표현으로, 어느 집단이나 사상이 주어진 굴레를 거부하고 이탈하여 자기의 주체성을 찾는 것을 의미한다. 본고는 이러한 탈주 개념을 바탕으로 여성인물들이 자주 경험하는 이탈적 행위를 분석하기 위해 『김약국의 딸들』, 『시장과 전장』, 『파시』를 주요 연구 대상으로 선택하였다. 또한, 박경리가 가정 공간에 대해 부정적 태도를 가진 것을 살펴보기 위해 『애가』, 『표류도』, 『가을에 온 여인』을 추가로 선정하였다. 2장은 『애가』, 『표류도』, 『가을에 온 여인』에 대한 분석을 통해 작가 박경리에 의해 부정적인 시각으로 재현된 가정 공간을 다뤘다. 이들 작품에서의 가정 공간은 여성들에게 억압의 장소로서 그림자만 남겨지고, 남성들의 통제와 집중이 가해지는 공간으로 그 실체를 드러냈다. 3장은 『김약국의 딸들』의 용빈을 통해 여러 차례 이루어지는 고향 벗어나기와 함께, 심리적 의존을 벗어나 더욱 강인한 여성으로 성장하는 과정을 분석했다. 고향을 떠나는 행위는 용빈이 낭만적인 환상에 사로잡혀 있던 종교와 남녀 간 사랑으로부터 벗어나, 더 성숙한 인간으로 성장하는 과정을 반영하고 있다. 이와 대조적으로, 고향 벗어나기에 실패하거나 종교와 사랑에 몰두하는 사람들은 자신의 비극을 마주하는 결과를 맞이하게 된다. 4장은 『시장과 전장』, 『파시』의 주요 무대인 시장 공간을 주목했다. 이 시기의 작품에서 여성인물들이 벗어나는 공간은 가정이나 고향과 같이 속적인 성격이 강한 공간에서부터, 시장이나 국가와 같이 공적인 성격이 강한 공간으로 전환되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 외의 작품에 대한 분석을 통해 여성들은 공간에서 벗어나는 동시에 자신의 자아각성을 제한하는 소용돌이에서도 벗어난다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 이러한 공간 벗어나기는 여성 주체성의 성장 과정의 통과 의례로 해석될 수 있다. 현재 우리는 다양한 공간에서 생활하고 있지만, 이러한 공간들에 대한 감각은 오히려 마비되어 있고 관심이 떨어지는 경향이 있다. 우리의 행동은 공간의 영향을 실제로 받고 있음을 깨닫고, 현재의 공간에 얽매이지 않는 삶의 다른 측면에 대한 사고를 가능하게 하는 것은 본 논문의 출발점이라고 할 수 있다.
